Hi - My kid has somehow gotten the blue screen of death with the memory dump message. The computer will now not boot normally - just get the flash of the dell start screen and then nothing else, hard drive does not sound like it's spinning. I tried to safeboot with F8 and got what is listed below and the safe boot did not finish. I was going to do a cleaning (read & run me first) but I can't get the system to boot. Can you help? I'm running windows XP sp3 on an intel processor.
    Thanks - Cal

Thanks for the help so far.....

I downloaded an AVG rescue CD and read the microsoft support info.

I'd like to get this machine back running without losing any info and programs. What is the best approach - rescue cd or microsoft recover per the website listed?

Also, there does not appear to be any instruction with the rescue cd. if that's the way to go, how do I use it?

    Thanks in advance....Cal

I ran into this problem with a Compaq recently.

Do you know if your Dell has a recovery partition? You can likely do a recovery and it may keep your original files. That's what happened with the Compaq I worked on. Are you getting any prompt to perform a system recovery at all?

If not, you can insert your Windows disk, boot to it and do a repair on Windows.

Dells no longer come with windows disks. They come with a hidden partition to recover and/or a popup that keeps telling you to create your own restore disks. The restore disk created will return the computer to the factory condition as will using the hidden partition. All data and new programs installed will be lost and unrecoverable.

Since safe mode is showing partition (2) as trying to boot, I suspect that partition(1) would be your hidden partition.
Since models do work differently, you need to specify the exact model and the number/letters after the model.

On the Dimension 2400 in our home, the recovery partition is reached by pressing F12 at startup.
On a different Dell, Ctrl + F11 gets the PCRestore started.

I rechecked the front and back of the pc box and the only model info is E310. On the shipping paperwork from Dell E310 is the only model info. Processor is listed as an Intel Pentium 4

more developments - I read thru info that ame with the pc and fired up the machine again holding down F8 which gave me a number of boot options.
I chose boot to last know good configuration and the system booted up. I did get an error message after boot which read:

The system has recovered from a serious error.

Not sure if any of that means anything. I will do a full clean per the read and run me first instructions in the malware section.

Do you have any additional suggestions on anything else I should do?

    Thanks,
    Cal
