    Hello,

Getting the above message...what's happening? :cry

This began last night out of the blue...had not loaded new software or installed new hardware. Any ideas?

Also, I can't remember how to get to BIOS setup on Toshiba Portege 4010 laptop...could use your help?

    Thanks,

    bkt

That message indicates either failing RAM or a failing power supply.
Down load this http://majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d1247.html (boot floppy)
or this http://majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d1247.html (ISO which you burn to create a boot CD).
Turn the computer off. Put in either the boot floppy or the boot CD and turn the computer on. Let it run to test your memory. It takes long so plan on doing something else while it is running. If there are any errors, a problem is indicated. If you can run the computer with just a single stick of RAM, do that and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't switch sticks and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, then you might need to replace the power supply.

The following are keys that will get you into the BIOS (I don't know specifically what Toshiba uses)
    F1
    F2
    F10
    esc
    del
Then the following combos also work when the single keys above fail to work
    CTRL + ALT + ESC
    CTRL + ALT + INS
    CTRL + ALT + Enter
    CTRL + ALT + S
    Page up key
    Page down key

    Thanks PLODR,

By failing power supply...I assume you're referring to an internal component that is part of the motherboard circuitry...and not the external power charger...correct?

Interesting, since I also happen to have a similar laptop...Portege 4000 rather than my 4010, I will test the memory sticks in it and get back to you.

I was wondering if my hard drive or the XP load could be corrupt?

    Thanks again,

    bkt

    PLODR,

As I think back there have been several messages which are part of the BLUE SCREEN. But can't recall since they flash on and off so fast. One that I do recall was...BAD POOL HEADER.

Also, I recall reading recommendations that pop up when XP doesn't load properly...one was to boot from the original XP CD and select "R". It also mentioned a problem with config in System32. I tried to reload and got the CD to boot XP but it hung after loading files...never went to completion where I could select "R".
