Blue Screen of Death - Oh Joy!

At first I thought my issues were virus related (about a month ago I had an attack of Alureon & Vundo but had gotten it mostly cleaned out thanks to all the info here). Blue screen came up once or twice (never happened before) but always rebooted fine.

Last night I rebooted and can't get past the blue screen of death no matter how many times I restart.

Went into Windows Recovery (though the resolution is off so I can't see the first 10+ characters of that or setup or anything, blah). chkdsk /f won't run (invalid), chkdsk /p first found an error but next time I ran it it was clear. I've also run chkdsk /r and haven't come up with any errors. Still can't get past the blue screen (it comes up right at startup. Windows logo flashes for about half a second then goes blue).

Is there anything I need to check in setup anything like that? If this is just complete HDD failure is there a way for some sort of back door to get info off before trashing it?

Or am I completely off the mark and it's something else entirely?

Unfortunately I don't know much about my system without having access to the comp to look it up, but I'm running on XP.

Any help, input, suggestions, or heckling would be appreciated.

During the rebooting process, repeatedly press the F8 key to enter Windows Advance Options Menu
    Last Known Good Configuration
    or
Disable automatic restart on system failure
    or
    Have you tried Safe Mode?

Do any of the above work?

What words and numbers do you see. Not the full, "if this is the first time nonsense" but just the words near the 0xc000000xx error number. Only the first number is needed the one in parentheses don't have to be posted.

Sorry, should've thought to include this information in the first place:

I'd already tried Last Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode with no luck, and just now I went over and tried Disable Automatic Restart and that didn't work either.

    Technical Information:
    *** Stop: 0x0000007B

    A stop 7B error is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

I learned something new today. Since I was not familiar with the /p switch, I did some looking and found this:
Which explains why you can't get /f to work - you are not in windows.

If you have XP disks (not restore/recovery disks), you can try a repair install.

If it were my computer, before I started trying any repair, I'd remove the hard drive, hook it up to another computer and copy any files I thought I'd ever need onto the other computer, or an external hard drive. Then I'd put the bad hd back into the original computer and try a repair.

Sorry for the horribly long delay for reply, but I had a short stint in the hospital and just haven't gotten back to things tech-y yet.

I don't know why i didn't even think to set it up as a slave. *smacks forehead* Was able to do this successfully, so thank you thank you thank you for the tip! While I had most of my stuff backed up there were a few recent files that I really wanted to get, so you really saved me there ^_^

Haven't been able to get that hdd to work so now I'm working on fixing up an old one from an old computer, so we'll just see how that goes ;)

Again, thanks for all the help ^_^
