I have a laptop running windows 7 x64 i came home to find it had been restarted I then found out it blue screened and the error was as follows

    ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.exe+ec542 fffff800`03055000 fffff800`0363d000 0x005e8000 0x4fa390f3 5/4/2012 4:18:59 AM Microsoft® Windows® Operating System NT Kernel & System 6.1.7601.17835 (win7sp1_gdr.120503-2030) Microsoft Corporation C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

    PCIIDEX.SYS PCIIDEX.SYS+8ab8 fffff880`012a8000 fffff880`012b8000 0x00010000 0x4a5bc114 7/13/2009 7:19:48 PM

the shutdown happened between 10am and 2pm roughly

I would like to kn ow what caused this I have had blue screens in the past which were caused by windows trying to use its own graphics drivers instead of the manufacturers but these have been resolved.

Any help would be most welcomed. Thank you very much in advance for an help.

I am going to run a full chkdsk and see if there are any bad sectors.

Hey kiddo, good to see you.

Let us know what you dig up.

There is a Microsoft article that references this issue:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/124550

You may end up doing a "Startup Repair". Also, you may want to check your RAM. Bad bits on the RAM will write bad data to the hard drive.

Guaranteed those prefetch files were what was screwing you up.

What you can do to go one step beyond the chkdsk is use Ccleaner to clear out the Old Prefetch files. It's under the Advanced section on Disk Cleanup.

You knock 'em out, reboot twice, and that rewrites the Prefetch files from scratch.

And, you may want to look into replacing the drive regarding the clusters. I'd load HDSentinel on it to check the status of the drive.

    Better safe, than sorry...

Yeah, I do know their generation. 7200.9 Seagate.

There were two when I passed it along. I'm guessing both have moved on to the great platter graveyard?
