I received the blue screen after an improper shut-down. I have windows XP media center edition 2005. HP Pavilion 3800+ AMD Athlon 64 processor.

    Blue screen stop code 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x87139B08, 0x00000000)

I did some research and have tried the following with no luck. I am unable to get a command prompt to type chkdsk /r

1)F8 on start-up click on last known good configuration
2)F8 on start-up click on safe mode with command prompt
    3) " " click on safe mode
    4) " " click on directory services restore mode

After all these choices it goes back to same blue screen

    5) I do not have a windows xp install disk. I made a bootable recovery console CD from file xp_rec_con.iso I tested and it worked on a different computer. I put into bad computer selected boot first CD. I then booted from recovery console CD. I get the hit any key prompt. Then windows setup and all the files start loading. But instead of getting the prompt to select R, it goes into a different blue screen stop code:

    0x0000007b (0xf7cb663c, 0xc34, 0x00, 0x00)

    6) F10 System recovery - select hardware diagnostics - select basic test - no failed devices. Also separately ran hard drive test and CPU & memory test - no failed devices. It appears I can run a system recovery but this would wipe out all my "stuff" which I am trying to avoid.

    7) I finally tried, for kicks, swapping out the RAM and no change.

I would greatly appreciate advice. Thanks

0x00000024 means the file system is corrupted. You need to run a chkdsk on the partition. 0x0000007b means that the disk did not have the proper Mass Controller Drivers. Does your computer have a SATA drive? XP does not have native SATA controller drivers.

The only option I know of that may help is to boot a Hiren's CD and preform the chkdsk for a command prompt in MiniXP. But, I can give no further help on using it because it is considered warez. Just google for it. You will need to burn the iso file with Imgburn and then boot.

From a boot disk chkdsk may need the /p command which is equivalent to the /f command.

I made a new recovery console CD from a differt iso file and burned with IMGBURN. I was able to run a chkdsk /r and unfortunately it immediately gave me this response:

The volume appears to have 1 or more unrecoverable problems.

Is there any thing else I can try at this point? Could the files become so corrupted because I turned off my computer when I got mad that yahoo was AGAIN running slow, not responding, and freezing, or did I likely have a virus? I was running Avast and frequently run scans and find nothing. I scan with Malaware Bytes and Spybot as well. I also occassionally use CCleaner.

You can try to do a system restore with erd 2007. It is a demo but it should give you the chance to do a system restore if you have any restore points. It will also give you the chance to recover any important data you need.

You will have to install this on a XP computer. Download the file here. The site is German but the program is English. After install it will create an iso file called erd50.iso in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset\. Burn this file with Imgburn. Boot the CD and try doing a System Restore under System Tools.

What is the make and model of your computer? It may have a recovery partition that will allow you to take it back to a factory state after you backup your data.

    computer info in first post

I stated in item 6 I ran a hardware diagnostics in system recovery F10. It appears I am able to run this system recovery, but my understanding is this takes me back to the original factory settings and all else is lost. Is this not correct? I am still hoping to avoid losing everything.

System recovery and system restore are different in that I can go back to an earlier date with system restore and not lose everything. Is this correct?

Is erd 2007 and microsoft diagnostics and recovery download the same thing? Is this different than the diagnostics and system recovery I already accessed by clicking F10 when booting?

erd 2007 is part of Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery. Basically a WINPE bootable cd that lets you do a system restore to a previous date. Not a factory reset. If you installed any programs after the restore date, then those would be not functional. I would also back up any data in desktop folders of your user accounts or move it to another folder like My Documents. Anything added to a desktop after a restore point is usually gone after a restore.

I am not sure if this will fix your problem but may as well give it a try as you do not have an install disk. If you had one of those, you could have done a sfc /scannow command to replace any corrupt files.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I wasn't aware that I had other options with an install disk besides running chkdsk /r. Maybe I will see if I can come up with one. I just have to make sure it is the same version of Windows XP, correct?

Sorry, I misspoke. I thought the scannow command could be run from the recovery console but it cannot. You can run it in safe mode but you do not have access to that. If you have an install CD with the same SP you could do a repair install but you will need your key in case XP needs to be reactivated.

Not to be a "downer", but your average life expectancy from a hard drive is about five years with regular use.

If you have been running this drive for more than five years, you may need to clone it, and work on repairing the Windows installation on the new drive before you lose everything.

As far as chkdsk goes, it can be a very dirty tool and doesn't necessarily fix errors properly. It is best used to tell you if the volume is flagged dirty, and has bad sectors.

    How old is this HDD?
