i am getting the blue screen of death. I am running windows xp pro. I was having trouble with a virus and user kaspersky boot disk to remove it. I got a message before I am the scanner that windows didn't shut down properly but did I want to go ahead and run the scanner. I did and it found 28 malwares. When I tried to reboot the system I got the blue screen of death.

    Here is the technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8B007760, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

I tried booting from the Windows XP disk and into the recover console. I can do that, but when I run chkdsk /r everything comes back ok.

    I also tried fixboot.

Using Kaspersky recovery disk I can boot into that and see the files. I can also get into windows recovery mode. At the very least I would like to recover the files off of the disk if I have to format it.

    thank you for your help!

    You can try: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
It's a bootable cd with a Mini Windows XP feature that gives you a nice GUI to work with as if you were on your own desktop.
From there you can browse explorer and back up whatever files you need to a flash drive or CD.

From there, once you have the data backed up to another location, you can troubleshoot the rest of your problems. Let us know if you need any more help.

So chkdsk did work for you?

Chkdsk did not let me get back into windows. What I should have said was that it did not come back with any errors or say that it fixed anything. It also did not take very long.

What do I do after i get the files off?

Can you boot back into Hiren Mini Windows XP and then retreive the dump (.dmp) files (if any are present) from this location:
And then attach them in your next post. (How to attach items to your post)

    Things I would check for:
    • boot.ini contents
    • the presence of ntldr and ntdetect.com in the root of C:\
    • Which partition is marked active (via Smart Fdisk on hiren dos tools)
    • the presence of other key windows files in C:\windows\ and ...\system32, specifically winlogon.exe and csrss.exe.

How long did it take? should take about an hour on average.
By chance does another partition, other than C: contain the WINDOWS folder?
