blue screen on clean install

I have an xp pro w/sp3 machine. dimension 5100.

I had some issues - see below - so i decided to do a clean install.
I have formatted the hard drive and installed xp pro sp2.
I have attempted to do this twice now. Both times i get a blue screen and windows fails to complete install.

message: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
STOP etc.

I read a few threads in this forum that hardware might be to blame. If so how do i determine what the issue is? any advice greatly appreciated

History:
I had a ton of viruses on it.
Viruses were removed as explained in this forum.
I then updated symantec as the current one had stopped being supported.
Soon after i was blue screening with naveng.sys, win32k.sys, and navex15.sys as the files with issues. i tried to uninstall symantec but blue screen would appear before i could do this. I tried to system restore but blue screen prevented. finally booted in safe mode but i was still blue screening. eventually i got a hang up booting at mup.sys. I then replaced the current registry with a generic set up in the hope to system restore. When i did this the mouse and keyboard (became unusable, both usb. no ps2 ports on this machine). so i then took all of my data off the drive and decided to clean install!

turns out it was a faulty memory module.
Removed it and all is well!
