After replacing a hard-drive, and some other stuff, and after a clean install of windows and all drivers and updates, the computer freezes, or I get a blue screen when trying to come out of stand by mode? I thought it was a bad ide drive, so now I have two SATA drives, clean re-install and all that, and still freezes out of standby mode. I don't know how to fix this problem.
My board is an ASUS A8N-SLI. XP pro. Two drives, one with videos, and a new samsung with a fresh install on it. Thanks for any help y'all might have.

what video card do you have? you might wanna try updating drivers for it (which im sure you have since it's a fresh install)
or in some cases, ive heard that some computers just don't do standby (for whatever reason), but that usually only applies to older ones.

I did swap vid cards to an EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8400 PCI-E 512. The problem did accur at the same time. I have 4 opticals hooked up to the 2 ide connections on the system board. I never knew if maybe the computer was confused and trying to read the DVD drives? It re-starts and cold starts flawlessly. My OS is on SATA1, and my media files and such are on SATA2. SB Audigy card, and an off brand tuner card are in the PCI slots. I have had the same board for a while, and stand by was never problem until I made the Vid card, tuner, and hard drive swaps, while at he same time connecting the opticals to the ide channels (E,F, IDE1)(G,H, IDE2). I think I did too much! If there is no easy solution, what should be my next step, take it all apart and put it back together one piece at a time? Thanks again

It is strange the way windows searches for the vid drivers. It takes longer that usual, and I'm presented with multiple options based on format (XP, XP64, and so on). I choose the XP32 file and it seems to install ok. no driver issues. DX 9C installed. I'm convinced there is a breakdown in communication somewhere, causing the lock-up, but the solution has always traditionally been OS re-install, thats why its so frustrating, since that has not yet solved the issue.

Can you post the blue screen error number? It should look like 0x0000007F (but different letters). If the error mentions any file names, please post them also...

EDIT- I went to ASUS and looked for BIOS updates that mentioned problems with standby.... There were a couple, esp v1004... give it a look http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8N-SLI

EDIT 2- Here's some more info that may help:

Thanks for the info, I will check out bios update options from ASUS when i get off work. To answer your Q, I wish I has a code to give you. I know exactly what your looking for, however... After the new SATA drive was put in , the blue screen is no more, just a lock-up in the welcome accounts screen (normal windows blue screen with my account pic and name), my mouse sticks, and I must re-start. Even when blue screen did appear, it came and went so fast, all I could tell was that it was a blue screen, less than 1 second.

Hey dlb, I updated the chipset drivers for my version 1010, and after reboot, all 4 opticals and the two SATA's were re-recognized. That's gotta be good, except now my SATA drives show up in the taskbar as removable devices? Problem is when I try to open the appropriate bios update (.bin file) with Nero Image Burn enabled, I get this error message; invalid device number (error 3)

Any freeware better to open the file?

I got a peak when I got the blue screen, this was all I could see before it restarted. 0x0000001 I didn't notice a letter or anything, I could try again, but I hate doing that on purpose. Sorry to bug you with all this, thanks again

The resolution to this problem was a new system board. Unable to update BIOS for unknown reasons. New board, ASUS M2N-E. Best North-South bridge Iv'e seen for under $100! ddr2 667 1.8v (NOT 2.1, be carefull), 8 gig cap. AM2. Highly recommend.:D
