Blue screen when trying to update sound driver

So recently my sound driver has stopped working, I got the "code 10" error message in device manager and the "No Audio output device is installed" over the speaker icon on my taskbar. I've had this problem before about 2-3 years back and while I initially fixed it, I've been having the problem on-off so I decided to just buy a cheap external USB soundcard, but that seemed to die on me yesterday so I am currently waiting for a new one to arrive by post.

I tried to go about fixing the audio problem in the meantime by uninstalling/reinstalling the Realtek HD audio device. When that didn't work, I tried downloading the latest sound driver off the Realtek site, but during installation, my computer got a blue/stop screen and restarted.
After it had restarted, I tried reinstalling, but again: blue screen. Third restart, the computer seemed to be trying to reinstalling it itself upon startup, but as you might imagine, I got another blue screen, so I decided to quickly uninstall the driver in device manager upon the next startup, and I've not had any blue screens since.

I'm currently on my laptop while posting this, so I can't post the exact specs, but it's a Commodore windows Vista 32-bit desktop that I've owned for nearly 5 years now. I've occasionally had blue screens during startup or when waking the computer from sleep mode, but I've never had them when the computer has been fully on and running.

    Does anyone have any advice?

    HI

is your Vista at latest Service Pack and updated?
In Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks by a device and if so what device?

What was the BSOD error code and message as this can help trace an issue.

Maybe worth attaching a log from Everest for us (I know other softwares are available but I know this ones output with Vista), do run as written below:

My initial thought is to uninstall any audio drivers, then re-install the chipset driver for your model PC and then reboot to finalise the install, then install the appropriate audio driver for the PC model and reboot. Even if you have Realtek audio a unified driver may not work as many OEMs like Commodore do custom spec various hardware so you need a specific driver for the hardware.

    Thanks for the reply.
I can't find any yellow marks next to anything in device manager at the moment.
I think I am running Service Pack 1, though I am unsure. I update the computer with Winodws Update on a regular basis, and that's about the only updating I have ever done.

I stupidly didn't think to write down the blue screen error code. I did manage to find some "the system shutdown was unexpected" logs in the event viewer, but they don't seem to have any conceivable error codes attached to them.

I've attached the everest file, hopefully it'll help.

    Hi

Cheers for the info and what I would normally do to try and 1st off rectify a driver issue is to run the below

    Microsoft Audio Fixit HERE

If that doesn't work then install the Chipset driver for your motherboard from HERE and reboot (do reboot as its needed to finalise the install) then install the audio driver from HERE, reboot and test.

I would also boot into safe mode (F8 at boot and choose safe mode with networking) and see if the audio works ok in this basic mode, as if it does without error, we maybe looking at trying to find a 3rd party application that's causing your audio to crash.

Ok, seems like I'm having even more problems now, lol.

I tried out audio fixit, but it didn't work, so downloaded the chipset driver and restarted my computer. I got a "installing" softwork icon on my taskbar soon after, and my audio appeared to be working again without even having to install the audio driver link you gave me. However, I didn't actually get much of a chance to try things out since the computer frooze briefly after, and I then got another BSOD.

The error code was: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop code: 0x000000D1

My main problem now though is that for some reason, my monitor will not switch on (I can still switch on the computer just fine, but the light is permanently off on my monitor, so I am having to post this from my laptop).

I'll update if I manage to get the monitor working again and try entering my computer in safe mode.

    Hi

When booting can you hit F8 and enter safe mode?

Alright, got the monitor working again, turns out it just a minor issue. After booting up the computer again to check if it was working, I noticed I was back to "no audio output is installed", though I got another BSOD after having the computer switched on for just 30 seconds or so.

Anyway, I'm currently in Safe Mode. There's no sound and the speaker icon says "The Audio Service is not running" when I hover over it. When I right click, it asks me if I want to enbale audio service, though clicking yes does nothing, and it still tells me that there are no audio devices installed.

I will be taking the computer to a repair store on Friday as I can no longer access the computer in normal mode without a BSOD popping up after 30 seconds or so.

This only occurred after I downloaded and installed the chipset driver, though I am unsure how to unistall it. Any help?

Edit: Just got a different BSOD (bad_pool_caller) when scanning for hardware changes in device manager (in safe mode).

Hi my friend , you can run msconfig via safe mode disabling all start up items , you can follow this

    https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090117145534AALH1xO

after that you can try normal mode seen if it works or not , maybe either some programmes is the culprit or wrong driver is the cause of this situation :wave

Hi, sorry to revive this thread, but I am still having the "No Audio Output Device is Installed" error, even though I have now upgraded to Windows 7.

The computer seems to be working fine otherwise, no blue screens as of yet, but not having any sound is making this computer pretty much useless for anything else other than surfing the internet (and since it's a gaming PC, I didn't buy it for this purpose).

Any advice? If it makes any difference, I installed Windows 7 to a new hard drive, but still have the old hard drive in my computer as I didn't want to lose anything.

    HI

Again what in device manager do you have as yellow ! marks if any and by what device as normally the issue of audio is both chipset and audio driver and you need to correct chipset driver to install the right audio driver.

What is full make and model of your PC?

Can't find any yellow exclamation marks in device manager.

The computer is a Commodore, and according to a sticker on the back it's a DSG G9555 model.
