blue screen with pink lines

Hi, may be posting to the wrong place, but it's a 50/50 chance, so I picked one. I am working on a co-workers machine. Dell Dimension 3000 running XP. Something is wonky with the screen in normal boot, it goes blue, with pink horizontal lines running periodically across the screen, in three or sometimes four columns. I thought it might be the monitor, but I tried it with another computer and it works fine. Also, I don't get the lines with I boot in Safe Mode or VGA mode.

May not be related, but my Event Viewer shows multiple DCOM errors.

I have wiped it of malware/viruses/spyware, etc. Ran chkdisk, defragged it, don't see anything weird in process explorer. There are some system services that don't want to stay turned on, but that may just be because I have to run it in SM or VGA to tinker with anything. Not sure how to proceed from here, or what other diagnostics I might run to find out what's misbehaving.

Any help from folks smarter than me would be greatly appreciated.

I LOVE Major Geeks!, thanks in advance for all replies.

    Brandy

Quick addition of info - once it has blue screened, it cannot be shut down at all. Have to pull the power supply to kill it.

    Thanks again.

While you are waiting for a tech to respond you might want to check
C: drive, windows, and look for minidump files. If you find any then wait for a tech to give you instructions on what to do next. Do you have any thumb drives or external drives connected, if so disconnect them and reboot.
But, wait for a tech to come on board to help you.

Do you have a graphics card installed?

If so remove it then try to boot using the onboard video.

I'd suspect the wrong video driver.
    Go here http://support.dell.com/support/dow...LH&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_3000
and download the last file under video, the oldest, which is recommended.
The other two drivers are optional so you may want to download them but not install.
Sometimes people install what they suspect is an updated video driver but it might not be the correct one for the hardware, especially in a Dell.

Also windows update suggests hardware drivers and I've learned by better experience to ignore all of MS's hardware suggestions and stick to the drivers from the manufacturer of the computer.
