    Hi,

I need some help with my laptop.

This is prob going to be a dumb question but the specs of my laptop
(Asus F50GX) has the following statement under the Fax/Modem/LAN/WLAN heading. Can anyone tell me if my computer has bluetooth or not?

    Integrated 802.11 b/g/n Built-in Bluetooth™ V2.1+EDR (optional)

When I go into control panel the little bluetooth symbol is there, when I click on it the bluetooth screen comes up but it can never find anything when I try to add device. The settings tab doesnt work either.

I have tried downloading drivers from the asus website but when it installs it says it can't find bluetooth hardware.

    Please help!

    Thank you :confused

Thanks for your reply, I prob should have stated these two points when I put my first post in....

1 - It is my work laptop, they bought it for me new but when IT gave it to me they didn't give me the manuals. The guy that was in charge of all the bits and pieces left suddenly and left alot of business unfinished and nobody knows where manuals for anything are! (my laptop is the bottom of the priorty list!!)

2 - The wireless switch on the side of the computer has always been turned on, the wireless icon is in the bottom left hand corner of the screen in the quickstart icons section. When I press Fn+F2 keys the icon flashes up on the screen for a few seconds but it is only the wireless symbol not the wireless and the bluetooth symbol.

This is what is confusing me as to whether or not my laptop has bluetooth. I spoke to the Asus support people before posting here and I think the guy just couldn't be bothered helping me. I told him my model number etc and he went through and said turn switch on, press Fn+F2 etc and when I told him that the bluetooth symbol didnt come up he put me on hold for a few min and when he came back he said it doesnt have bluetooth. To me the statement in my first post says that it does and that either my computer or the software/hardware is faulty.

    Comet,

Boot into your BIOS and see if there's a setting there to enable/disable bluetooth and make sure it's enabled. My HP laptop has that, but I don't know about Asus. And on mine it's in the same BIOS screen as enable/disable wireless. From your info it certainly appears that you have the hardware for bluetooth.

    Good luck.

If the bluetooth adapter is correctly installed it shows up that way in device manager. Look there, and if necessary, uninstall the bluetooth device and get the driver here, and reinstall it.

Ok this is is what I have so far.... please let me know if I am right or wrong!!

My wireless network adapter is Atheros AR928X, this runs the wireless lan console as well as the bluetooth?

If this is installed correctly and working correctly (right clicked, properties, device status = "this device is working properly") then by rights the bluetooth should work?

I have updated the driver software for the network adapter through device manager.
I have been on the asus website and downloaded and installed the latest version of the Wireless Console Utility and the WLAN driver and application.
I have downloaded the Bluetooth driver and have tried to install it, it goes through as if it's all installed, it says it's finished installing etc etc but then when I try to use it it doesn't work.

Do you suggest uninstalling the wireless network adapter and all wireless/bluetooth applications and completely reinstalling them?

    Comet,

Just curious if you found a Bluetooth enable/disable setting in your BIOS? Sorry, others are better able to help you with drivers, etc.

    Good luck.

I haven't rebooted my computer yet to get into the BIOS..... I might do that now. I think I will actually!

Too bad there were no BIOS settings for them, but I suppose that would have made it too easy :p

The word "optional" in parentheses tells me it is an addon to the standard laptop that would cost extra. I suspect your employer didn't see the need to buy it.

Because I am not a computer guru and I don't know for sure this is exactly why I asked the question in the first place.

From what I've read (which isn't much because I can't find much on the topic) the optional bit relates to the EDR. It makes no sense to me to say "built in" and "optional" in the same sentence if it was related to the same componant.

If you can confirm for sure that this is what it means then it would be greatly appreciated and my question will be answered!

    Thanks

    Agreed.
It's not a computer speak thing, it's purely a sales pitch. Optional = "if you ask nicely and pay us extra before ordering, we'll fit Bluetooth".

The built-in part means they'd swap out the fitted wireless only card and fit a dual-purpose one, rather than a Bluetooth USB dongle that you could probably buy for $10 (and potentially lose easily).

EDIT: EDR = Enhanced Data Rate

Thank you for answering my original question satrow!!
