When I lost my Bluetooth going from Win 7 to 8 I would like to know what to do. Should I download it or can it be bought and installed. I need it for my phone.
It shows that I have it in my compatibility as an .exe file but is not in add remove..
I know there is a card in the pc because it worked with Win 7. What should I do?

You need the bluetooth driver for your PC. It should be a free download from your PC manufacturer's website.

If you have a bluetooth adapter in your comp then it will show in Device Manager, possibly with a yellow question mark. If it's there then double click it and try to update the driver.

There is nothing in device manager > network adapter except 3 items that have to do with the adapter.

The only reason I thought I had it in my system was because I ran the compatibility procedure and 4 blue .exe icons appeared.

Bluetooth worked well in Win 7.

Should I conclude it is not in my system and get a dongle or pursue this interior card idea?

If it worked in 7, and this is the same computer, then an adapter exists. Is there nothing in device manager with a yellow question mark, or whatever query status icon 8 uses?

Also have a look in Services - anything Bluetooth related there?

    >>There is a Bluetooth support service in services and I changed it to automatic.

When I ran the compatibility procedure I got 4 blue Bluetooth icons saying .exe but my attempt to revive BT was not successful.
I unticed metered as you should.
Could my changing the services to automatic help?
Most importantly, does Bluetooth support service, in services show I do have BT or not?

I used the link (below)to get BT software and it said to turn it on.
I went to the BIOS and in networking there were three items under networking. It said Bluetooth. One item was hotkey with Wlan separately and also in hot key. "All" was in hotkey too. There was third but I forgot it.
I went back to the link and it said to turn the BT on again.
It seems I have BT and the right link but cannot turn it on. For me the BIOS is hard.

    Hi Peter

What model Dell do you have now, I forget?
Did you do an upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7? (plus is it 32bit or 64bit)

I would be looking at possibly updating the Chipset driver for your model Dell to a listed Windows 8 one and checking.

Do you get a BT icon in the system tray?

The laptop is Inspiron 15R, N5010, 6 GB ram.
I did a clean install from Win 7 to 8.
I will give the chipset update a try.
There is no BT icon in the systray.

May I ask, when I click on delete so only x amount of unallocated is showing should there be a reserve partition created going from 7 to 8?

Now does the same occur when going from 8 to 7.

I want to have the reserve partition but when I click delete on the allocated partition it becomes unallocated which I click next to.

At what point do I include the reserve partition?

    Thank you

P.S. I forgot to mention, I am almost done going from 8 to 7 with the desktop although I will keep an image of 8.
I think I may do the same with the laptop but I still would like to know the answers regardless. Win 7 has all I need and is user friendly. I got to know most of 8 but after the novelty wore off, I think 7 is the better deal.

    I thought you would be interested to kow that when I am in the BIOS, and find wireless there are four choices;
    1-ALL which is the default
    2-WLAN
    3-BT
    4-none

Do you think if I clicked BT it would open the switch as the icon says the BT needs to be turned on?
    What to do after though?

I found an odd recommendation for getting Bluetooth which I lost moving from Win 7 to 8.

The tutorial said to go to comp>system 32 and search for fsquirt which I found and there were 5 entries. One was .exe and the others were applications. The tutorial said to select and make a shortcut to desktop but neglected to say which to select.
Does this make any sense to anyone? I don't know if it is a joke or for real.

I found this page which I do not know will provide BT for my Win 8 which was Win 7.

In an earlier post, you said you switched back to Windows 7. Was that a different PC? I am getting that you decided to keep 8 on the laptop but switched back to 7 on the desktop? Assuming you have no problems with the desktop.

    On to the laptop...

So let me see if I have this. You changed from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and you lost the capability of your USB bluetooth adapter? Definitely a driver problem, but Windows 8 should be able to handle any bluetooth natively. If it does not, you will need to acquire the manufacturer's driver for the device.

The instructions you had (I assume this is to establish compatibility between your BT and Windows 8) were to place a shortcut to fsquirt on the desktop of your laptop. What were you to do then? If it says start the application, then it's the .exe shortcut you want there. However, I have a question about this advice. Was it for Windows 8 specifically? It would help if you could post a link to the procedure.

On the BIOS switch. I would say it's worth a try if all else fails, although I am fairly certain it would fail too, since the "All" setting includes the BT setting. The "All" selection should work...

Yes, this is confusing. let me try to clarify things.
My Dells had Win 7 on both desktop and laptop.
I made a dvd of Win 8 from the iso file and have 8 on both.
Neither has Bluetooth since the conversion.
Prior to that, BT worked perfectly, and prior to the move to 8 the advisor told me BT would not be compatible, so it was not a surprise.
I have tried every Google suggestion and a lot of advice from forums to no avail.

There was an addendum to MS's advice in an article that I read, "If the above steps do not work, you may have to wait for the appropriate driver to be made available for you to regain your BT."

I think there may be some who have had success but it may depend upon the manufacturer.

There may be some truth to the MS article, also.

I identify my pc at the dell site but it sees it as Win 7.

I admit I found a driver somewhere that said Dell N5010/15R for Win 8 BT but read the whole thread and it worked for some but not others.
Obviously this is a problem others besides me are experiencing and I left it alone until I saw this fsquirt and wondered what it was. I have since lost my referrals sue to reading so much and with the passing of time.
I appreciate your help but unless Dell or MS offers THE driver, I an going to stop trying to solve it. I do not have my fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear about this mess. I'm having some difficulty understanding why Microsoft would have released 8 without compatibility for all Bluetooth adapters. Surely they had to know how commonly used they are.

I assume there are some that do have compatibility. Maybe you can find a deal on a couple of them someplace.

    C'mon Microsoft:major

It's up to the OEMs, not Microsoft to provide drivers. C'mon Dell might be more appropriate ;)

    Hey, Earthling...

Respectfully have to disagree when it comes to USB adapters. The reasoning is that I would say, if you are updating to Windows 8, at least part of the update would have something to do with the internet.

I guess the tradition with network adapters has always been that the OEM provides the driver. It's a little strange to me, though, that if I install a USB HD, Windows has me covered. When I attach my USB camera or camcorder, again Windows has me covered. However, with a USB network adapter, something used during an upgrade, MS has no driver.

Tradition says you're right Earthling. Seems like it would be easier/better for OS writers just to provide a generic driver for network cards, though...

I must be dreaming :zzz rolleyes

    >>Thanks for the help AtlBo.
    Only for the sake of accuracy I will edit one of my comments;
"I admit I found a driver somewhere that said Dell N5010/15R for Win 8 BT but read the whole thread and it worked for some but not others."
It should have said that the Dell selections were unclear to me. For example, when it said Dell N5010/15R for Win 8 BT I did not know if that meant for those who already bought Windows 8 and wanted the driver or for those like me who moved from Win 7 to 8. I did not want to chance it.
I am ok and thanks again.

    peterr...

That makes sense. You could install it and end up in Microsoft's bluescreen oblivion...never know. Seems like a sensible approach to wait for a driver that has 100% approval from users!

    :)

Win 8 is Win 8 peter. How you got there is not relevant. So if you have found a driver that may work there would be no reason at all not to try it. If you want a belt and braces approach then image the system first.

Below is the link to the driver. When I tried to install it, it kept telling me, in step one of 4, to turn Bluetooth on. I looked in the BIOS and only saw 'network'. I don't know if I should have clicked enter on 'network'.
I also clicked the keyboard switch for network on and off.
I had Bluetooth with Win 7 so the card must be there but maybe not Bluetooth.
I thought you might want to see the driver link below.
I am not going to pursue this but I wanted to show you what had been done.
