Risk is the ultimate board game for me. Stratego takes second place.

Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, Risk. All great fun when the kids were growing up. Gonna have to dig them out again sometime...

I have played risk, but games that I think that are based on similar practice, but are far superior, and that take a heck of lot longer to play:

    Supremacy
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/27 (play time about 6 hours, though, with all the expansions, play time usually takes 2 days or so.)

    Attack!
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/6752 (Play time is 3 to 6 hours)

Ever heard of Pegs and Jokers?

Our family favorite, kind of home made... big in the RV circuit.

Google it, there are a few sets on Ebay.

Or if you think a weekend game is to short, try ASL (Advanced squad leader) With all expansions from 6+ hours to maybe a week (or more).

This is not your typical beginner game. From what I hear you need to find someone to help you play. But, also from what I hear, if you can master this game, you could probably act as a real general of an army.

This is one of the most detail battlefied games ever created.

    A pic of the game:

I used to play a lot of board games. Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue, Risk, chess, hexagonal chess (very tricky), upwords, checkers, Ludo, etc. The list goes on. Some of the war battle strategy ones were very absorbing too.

Alas, not much time for that, nowadays. I usually end up playing the computer version, so I can save and turn on/off at my leisure.

Computer games can be fun, yes. But facing your opponents over a table is so much better. IMHO.

monopoly, axis and allies, chess, pass out, Life, scrabble (i love a good game of scrabble) and anything that has to do with vocab and word association.

nothing funner though than drinking some beer with your friends and playing monopoly or Life

I know this is an old thread. But, I'm bringing it up again.

I bought quite a few new boardgames since I posted this.
    So, I'll list them here:

    Roboralley
    Ticket to Ride: Marklin edition
    Railroad Tycoon
    Warrior Knights
    Goa
    and a few others.

Once again, are there anyone, besides me, who are real boardgamers out there?

I'm no longer as avid or rabid about board games as I used to be. In fact, up until my marriage bust-up, our circle of friends would gather once a month, for a game-night. Even the gals enjoyed playing strategy, and war games, once they figured out that a stack of Panzers could punch gaping breaches through the French infantry. One board game, that comes to mind is my favourite; Diplomacy. I first played it in college ( Carleton University-Ottawa ) in the early 70's; a bit before theefool was born.:) Frequently, John Blackburn, (future CBS News correspondent ) would show up for the battle for Europe. He was very honest in the diplomacy department, with no apparent desire to win whatsoever.:) My best performance of course, was with me( Ottoman Empire) my room-mate ( Austria-Hungary) and Dan Aykroyd (Russia), teaming up to take on the rest of Europe( England France Germany and Italy). After Russia and Austria got embroiled in conflict, I declared war on my two allies. Once I had acquired a few extra states from my ex-allies, I was powerful enough to withstand the combined forces of the other six. Of course Dan Aykroyd, was Danny, then, and he was a total cut-up.:) He did note that he'd never seen the Ottoman Empire win, before, but from now on he wasn't going to trust me - ever again. He was only joking - of course. Later, he invaded the United States via Saturday Night Live, when fellow Canadian Lorne Michaels asked him to sign on.
Board games used to be the "video games" of that generation. We were "nuts" for them. It's charming to hear, that some of the younger generation, are re-discovering their appeal. Perhaps, occasionally, you will meet some interesting people along the way. :)

I can't help myself. They were a good bunch of guys.:) It's nice to see they've done alright for themselves. The worst of it -- I crossed Danny's path, a couple of years ago. He did a double look at me - as if he recognized me, but then he was moved along by his entourage.:)
