    Bold Fonts
Does anyone know how to make the fonts in Windows bold?
I don't mean a higher dpi which screws up the icons and doesn't help me read on screen text- simply bold text.
(preferably to affect ALL text for ALL programs)
I use Windows XP by the the way.

    Many thanks in advance! :)

Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Advanced. Then you have to click on the text in the 'sample desktop' window and select a font and select the Bold button. I have attached a screen shot so you'll know what to expect. The red boxes show the main choices you need to be aware of; the red arrows show you the text that needs to be clicked on in the sample desktop; the green box shows you where the Bold enable button is. Once you have everything set up, I'm pretty sure you can save it as a theme so if something gets changed, you can just reload your theme and it's back how you want it.
Good luck! I hope this helps!

I appreciate the reply but this doesn't work.
The B for bold button is grayed out. Despite getting most of the text to appear bold in the advanced settings it has no effect on the actual windows I work in (explorer, help files etc...)
I was able to turn the text fire engine red however -the colour part of the options works...but not bold. :(

You wont find bold in desktop section.you will have to go in:Active title bar,Icon,Inactive title bar,Menu,Message box,in order to change the size of the fonts.

I have tried that earlier this evening and several times in the past and it doesn't work.
Can anyone send a screen cap. of a 'before/after to prove to me that it's possible?

Well, you get a preview of the prospective changes right there in the panel where these settings are changed. Have you not noticed that? For me, there's still some skepticism that you're really used the panel in the right way to make changes. Take a look at my attachment. Have you used the drop-down arrow to select Active Title Bar, etc., and make changes?

Window Text allows you to change the colour but not the boldness- if you notice on your screen cap (where you circled the list in red) the font is NOT bold.

I want to change the font the system uses by default to a bold one. NONE of the options in display allow me to do this- where I can use a bold font I do but it's not where I need it- file management in Windows explorer, chm. files. etc.

See attachement if you don't understand what I mean.

Yes, it IS bold. And, I can change it.

I don't believe Windows provides a global bold setting. But, you could set global font size to Large Fonts (Display Properties, Appearance, Font size). Perhaps that would be a suitable alternative here.

Never mind. I figured out that the default font evidently doesn't have a 'bold' version.
    Comic Sans does however.
Thanks to the people who replied.
