I use convertx 2 dvd to encode .avi movies to dvd format, but with my current hardware setup it takes over an hour to encode a 1gb movie. My question is if I upgrade to a good GPU will this increase my fps on encodes? What is a good GPU for this purpose? What else would be a good upgrade for my current setup that would boost performance in this area?

    Specs:

    Mobo-Asus M4A785-M
    CPU-QuadCore AMD Phenom X4 9850, 2500 MHz
    RAM-4 GB Crucial DDR2 800 mhz
    GPU-Onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 (256 MB)
    OS-Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I would start with a ram upgrade, that seems to be the most lacking component you have listed. Going from 4 gigs to 8 should make a huge difference, probably more then a faster processor.

Video encoding is all cpu,so I would upgrade your cpu,the results aren't proportional to the amount of money you spend though,if you bought the best CPU you can get your hands like the new socket 2011 sandybridges you will only halve the time it takes.

I looked into this recently and THE best cpu/price point for video encoding are the I5 sandybridges.

    @puppy-thx I will give it a try

@colemenguy-yeh was kind of planning on doing that just waiting for some bargains on ram. quick question for ya, I thought my mobo only supported DDR2 ram but when I ran AIDA64 it says it supports these types:DDR2-400, DDR2-533, DDR2-667, DDR2-800, DDR3-800 SDRAM. I went onto the asus site and no where was it listed thatthis board accepts DDR3, how can I bee sure that it will accept DDR3 b4 I buy 8 GB of it?

@Rikky-i5's are nice but come with a price and I am running an amd platform do to cost vs. intel so i have to go with amd. intel does have the fastest processors but they come with a price tag. I know my board will support the new phenom II x 4's is it worth the upgrade for the performance I will gain? Or is there a different amd cpu that would be better?

I disagree, I use Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate 6 to convert my Movies to DVD format. Using my CPU (E6600 running at 3Ghz) it takes me about 35-45 minutes to convert a movie (about 1hour45Minutes) to Mpeg2 ready for DVD. This program can make use of the GPU AMD/ATI or Nvidia and when using CPU&GPU it only takes about 20-30 minutes to do the SAME movie using my old ATI 4850, so a more powerful Nvidia card would save even more time.

    You know I just don't know:confused

I don't do any video encoding,I read up on it a while back on video card encoding but concluded that the software just isn't ready.

When this thread popped up I even Googled again to see if there are any decent programs that can make use of modern video card performance,I have a watercooled GTX590 I want to make use of for such tasks but I couldn't find any apart from badaboom and from what I've heard it isn't much faster than cpu converters and doesn't offer the same quality,it also isn't free.

I will definitely be looking into Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate 6 for my own use and if it can make efficient use of the GPU then I agree with you,a video card would be a much better option.

EDIT Yup it does support up to X5speed with CUDA on Nvidia, wow amazing I'll be playing with that soon:)

Thanks guys that was what I was looking for. Iv'e got an old Geforce 9500 Gt which xilsoft is compatible with will see if it gives me any more fps when encoding.
Kind of a crappy card but will work for now until I can afford a better one.;)
