When I start the PC I get an "establishing link" message, then it says connection failed check cable, then the PC boots normally. What is it looking for and how do stop it and hev go straight to the hard drive?

The PC is trying to boot from the network. The "cable connection failed" or the "check cable" message is referring to the ethernet/network cable. This 'error' is more annoying than anything else and is NOT the sign of impending doom or disaster ;) No worries. To get rid of it, go into your BIOS and change the boot order so the hard drive is first. That should do it. You can also bypass the 'error' message by press Esc on most PCs.
