I reformatted my hard drive, I re-installed xp pro on a 32 bit laptop.
Now when I boot up I get three windows Xp Professional options, I select the top one and it boots up fine.
I went to msconfig and into Boot INI, I can see three xp pro boot paths, the top one is (partition 1) and the other two say (partition 2),

If I click on the top selection I cannot select it as default boot as it is greyed out, I can however select any of the other two as default.
I am not sure what to do.

Sounds like you started to reinstall XP as a partial install, is why you have the 2nd partition. You will have to edit the Boot.ini file to delete the other XP, or do an uninstall of the OS, by deleting the partition after you edit the Boot.ini, or you are going to have problems.
