    Hi

The last days my comp has begun acting strange. About half of the times I turn it on, it works normally until it reaches the welcome screen and I can see the text "Welcome" (I have the comp automatically logging in to my account). At that point the processor stops to work, after half a minute the welcome screen goes away and now the only thing I can see is my wallpaper and the cursor. When firing up taskmanager it shows that about 28 processes are working (when it's finished booting it should be 40) but it says that cpu usage is 0%.

2 minutes later the cpu finally starts to work again and the last processes initiates and the taskbar, start menu, systray and the desktop icon is shown.

The things I've done the last days with my comp is installing a HP PSC 1402 All-In-One printer/scanner/copier, installing Diskeeper 2007 and running manual defragment on both my partitions (C:\ and D:\ - both on the same physical drive) and running Microsoft Bootvis Optimization Tool.

When trying to again running the Bootvis Optimization the comp gets stuck at the boot screen and the little bar in the middle goes on and on forever.

Another problem that has shown up in the last time (don't know for how long and if it's related to this but maybe) is that when attempting to disable any process från the startup in msconfig a text shows up saying "Access denied. Need to be logged in as administrator etc...". That is when trying to "Apply" the changes. I am logged in as administrator.

Hope you have any idea of what to do.

    Thanks in advance!

Ps. I have attached a pic of my boot sequence (screenshot from bootvis) if it is for any help

Have you tried deinstalling any of these softwares (including deinstalling the HP machine) or backing up to a previous restore point?

No I haven't uninstalled anything. Should I try that?

About the system restore thing. I've never done that before and don't exactly know what it does. Let say that I roll back to the system restore point that was created the 4th of december. Won't that make any software installed after the 4th unusable? I mean won't that make any registry changes, after the 4th, undone?

    Tillman,
I don't think it will make it unstable. It should just make it go away! The problem when you install several softwares at once is you either don't know which one is causing you problems OR, you don't know if there is a conflict arising between any two of them. Therefore, in order to narrow down the problem, it is best to go back to a known working point, and then install them one at a time and see what is working. If you have a feeling one of them is causing the problem, don't install that until last, and ... if the others work without it, don't install it at all.

To go back to a previous restore point go to:
    Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Programs (?)/Restore Points
open that window and follow the directions and choose a point from before you installed the different pieces of software.

My question mark is because I don't remember the exact translation for what comes after Accessories. My computer is not in English.

I have saved my computer MANY times by taking it back to an earlier Restore Point. I hope this will help you.

Okay sounds like a good idea Abri :p I'll try it during today, unfortunately I'll have to do some serious studying as well so I'm not sure if I'll manage to check out all the applications today.

    Thanks for help =)

I've done uninstallations/reinstallations/installations during today and this is what I've found out:

The strange boots was caused by Diskeeper 2007. The delayed boots only occurred after disabling DkIcon from startup in msconfig (re-enabling it didn't fix the problem. Needed to reinstall DK 2007).

Solution: Changed to PerfectDisk (the diskeeper was however only trialware and I wanted to be assured that no problems would appear again)

For the msconfig problem "Access denied. Needed to be administrator etc.." this is what I found out. Along with the codec pack called ACE Mega Codecs Pack that I had installed was an application called "Startup" which manages the startup program (Autostart and registry keys). Maybe that program caused the msconfig problem?
Uninstalling the codecs pack (and the "Startup" program) doesn't solve the problem. System restore doesn't work. I get a message "System restore incomplete. Choose another restore point..."

    Solution: Help is appreciated

    Thanks in advance
