Perfectly good XP home system. Added another HD, and it trys to boot to this, but can't as there is no OS, I'm going to use it for storage.

On restart, I can change to the C: drive and boot fine, but I have to do this each restart.

Went to bios and attempted to change the boot sequence. I can select the drive I wish to boot from, but the - + keys nor arrow keys move the drive up the list.

The new drive is device 1, and the old drive, the that can boot is drive 0.

    Any help appreciated...

use the up down arrow keys to high light the drive then the + - keys to move to top

don't forget to save when you exit

Jumpers good, set as slave on the additional drive.

Sorry to ask this but are you running on SATA or IDE?

This may sound like a weird method, but if you are running on SATA make sure the primary HDD is connected to the SATA10 (the first SATA port on your mobo. Subsequent ports are normally labelled SATA11, SATA12 and so on...).

If you are running on IDE just make sure you connect the Master Cable to the primary HDD.

Weird as it may sound, but these are some of the methods I used when experiencing such problems occassionally.

IDE, jumpers correct, cables good. I may end up flashing BIOS to see if that works...

Thanks all for your help and time!!

    Hi

Whats the connection layout you have as in are the two HDDs on the same ribbon cable or on seperate ones?

If on seperate ones move them to the same cable, or if they are on the same cable at times the position on the cable that the Slave drive and Master occupy can cause this, as IDE ribbon cables for the most part have two drive connectors, put the Master on the top connector and the slave on the middle connector.

They were on seperate cables, now on one, configured as you suggested.

    Problem solved!

Thanks to you and to all...
