Hi All: I have seen, but don't remember, software that monitors the boot process, timing each step, such that the user can review which processes are taking the most time. Can someone point me towards this solution?

I'm running Win2000 Prof and booting is taking over 2min. I believe it's the DSL load that's slow but would love to see everything. Is there something like this on shut down??

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Cliff

I know the write up on it talks about browser configs and such, but the config button, then misc. tools has options to create startup log - and I think can show what started on last run.

I know for XP there is BootVis , a simple tool by microsoft that does just what you are looking for..... but i am not sure what a compatible one for win2000 would be.... maybe someone else knows.

also, be careful to run a boot-optimizer (theres one included in Bootvis), as for me it seemed to SLOW my boot about 15 seconds:(

Thanks Ched: I just tried it but while it lists the startup items it doesn't show the respective time each takes. I need something like a startup log that runs during the boot process that will time each steps duration.

    Got any more ideas?? Cliff

There is an BOOT.INI options which can generate a log at startup (Also think you can enable it by pressing F8 at startup)
If you don't feel comftable about editing your BOOT.INI then you could get hold of the MSConfig from WinXP (Works with Win2k) it makes it easier to configure the BOOT.INI options.

Btw. were you able to run Bootvis in Win2k or did you only read the description of the program ? (Have been trying myself but with no luck)

while BOOT.INI will allow you to log the drivers/programs that are loaded on startup, as far as I know there is no utility built in that will evaluate the time each process takes to load, and certainly not bring up a graphic representation of the boot analysis. if i'm wrong i will kick myself:confused:

here are a few more i have found, you can try them and see if they work.

Boot Log Analyzer this one claims to be for Win9x, but its worth a shot to try on 2000

PNP Enumeration Tool and Boot Time Measurement This tool will measuere the Boot times of the Plug N' Play devices that load at windows start

Here is a last resort, http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/archive/newPC/fast-boot.mspx#XSLTsection129121120120 its microsoft's walk-through on how to measure Boot Time, with tips on improving boot times, however it will only hint at what KINDS of devices are causing the delay (no names :( ) the PNP thing above should get a little more specific

these are what i can find for now.... if you'd like more, keep asking

Think you are right, as I just thought that it would write the time of loading the different devices(like the bootlog.txt in Win9x), but according to the example below this is not the case:
    http://www.winnetmag.com/Files/7494/Screen_01.gif

Guess if one also use the /NOGUIBOOT and /SOS then one can monitor and time the loading of devices, as they will be listed on the screen as well.

I don't know about getting specific times, but if you suspect the DSL. Go to Start then run and type msconfig, then click on the startup tab. If you can locate the DSL that is starting with windows (sometimes the naming convention in there is whacky). but if you can locate it uncheck it and reboot and see how long it takes to start without it. You can always go back and recheck it afterwards. I thought it might be worth a try.

Thanks for all the hints. Boot log analyser was the one I remember seeing before. Had 98se at the time and it worked great. Just tried it on 2K and it doesn't work.

Will try the MS site next. While I know DSL is one slow mother to load, really want the total picture. Will also try Boot.ini.

    Thanks again, Cliff

    Ruh Roh....
    I didn't check that...

After a bit of surfing, I have seen several references to running bootvis in 2000...but nothing official on Microsoft...

Hmm.. You just had to throw a curve ball, didn't ya??;)

Sharing time! I loaded and tried to run BootVis.exe. Didn't work. Got the following: "Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry point RtlFlushSecureMemoryCache could not be located in the dynamic line library ntdll.dll."

Probably shouldn't be a surprise since I'm in 2k and it's looking for an XP dll.

Will look around some more and advise. At this rate I should be promoted soon! :)
