    Hello all!

My wife, almost exclusively, uses her laptop to check email, and surf the web.

I'd like to set her laptop up so when she turns it on, it will log on (or just not go to the log in screen), and open internet explorer to her home page automaticly.

    XP Home edition. Possible?

Hello Cattyflyer, Welcome to Major Geeks

This is not a good idea.

About 10% of my service call are to computers where something like thismhas been done. It works too. Until a problem update, problem connection, or just plain cussedness on the part of the pc intervenes and then the user looses speed and functionality at best and access at worst.

To skip the logon goto Start > Run and type control userpasswords2 there you'll see a check box for require user name & password - uncheck it.
Then you can launch your browser, find her homepage, create a shortcut (click in the address bar and drag it out to the desktop), then open C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and put it there.

Listen to Studiot, as he says, if you get any of those hitches, you can be shut out of system restore , or booting at all, when you skip the log on.
It is different for those, like most geeks, who can know get to our work, if we crash our systems.- I don't use log on, but I encourage others to use it.

Baklogic and Studiot; Is it possible for the computer to be connecting to the internet before all the security software has kicked in and started protecting the computer?

If so, I would rate this as a VERY good reason for following Studiot's advice.

Yes it is chookers which is why I would not recommend it. Just let the machine boot up normally and then connect using your favourite browser, following your AV automatic update!

Decent antivirus software kicks in on boot to check boot for virus, and my Ashampoo firewall, kicks in there too.
But if you have ever been caught, and had your startup destroyed, as Studiot described, you will log on as normal. Costs money to fix - Studiot gives good advice, but no doubt those who ignore it, are sometimes welcome to swell the turnover - good business, but not what genuine computer technitions want - The cowboys love it, and usually lose all your data, when presuming to fix it, and reformatting, often because they don't know how, and charging rediculous sums.
Only change things in a computer, if you can get a restore point first, and not if it means, like this case, that you could finish up with the dreaded circle, and non start situation.
