My son's computer has a serious problem and will not boot up. Will go to the Windows XP screen blue moving right along, then goes blank and sits there. Tried starting in safe mode and all it does is list all the driver, sys files. Any help out there?

When booting to safe mode your computer may appear to 'hang' during the process. Though not always, it can sometimes take a LONG time to boot into safe mode, particularly if there has been some recent OS corruption. If you let it sit for a time, say ten minutes or so, it may well boot into safe mode. If it does, you can then try going to the c: drive in my computer and running defrag from the tools under the properties tab. After defrag (if you get through it) go back into properties and tools on the drive (right-click the c: drive, then left click properties the tools button and Check Now under error checking). Put a check in the boxes and click Start. Click Yes in the next dialogue box then close all the windows and restart the computer. With luck it will start into the operating system then start running a disk check. Typically if anything is found it is automatically repaired and windows will start at the completion of the check. If the issue is not resolved after that process you can try booting to the repair console ( or your Windows CD if the repair console is not installed) and running a chkdsk from the command prompt:

1 Start Windows XP with the Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD drive.
2 Once you see the "Welcome to setup" message, press the letter 'R' on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.
3 Select the Windows installation to be repaired (you will need to know the administrator password).
4 You will then get a DOS prompt. from here, type: chkdsk /p [Enter]
5 Upon completion you will be returned to a command prompt. Type: exit [Enter] and try booting into windows again.

Had about eight trojan virus on system. Ended up getting a larger hard drive and started from scratch. After the install did scan on old hard drive, thats when I found all the viruses. Never did boot up on the old hard drive, no matter what I tried. Thanks for you suggestions.
