Boot Up Problems

I've always had trouble shutting down my PC. Usually several bits of software crash and I have to shut them down manually. I know it's wrong but I sometimes just stop it using the On/Off button. I did this a few days ago and I've had trouble booting up ever since. It goes into chkdsk then says it is correcting error in index $SII for file 9. It then fills the screen with messages:
"Inserting an index entry with ID _ _ _ into index $SII for file 9"
each line it increments the ID number by 1, I've seen it get up to about 3000 before I've shut the PC down again. If you cancel the chkdsk it goes into a loop of showing the Fujitsu startup screen then the XP startup screen then back to the Fujitsu one, ad infinitum. I started it this time using the XP cd. It offered me its "Recovery Console" but when I tried that I just got a DOS prompt.Any suggestions?

 

i had similar problems - at first i thought it was caused by software conflicts, but in hindsight i think it was a virus. once chkdsk ran on reboot it was game over... i had to use an Acronis boot disk, and restore the partition of my computer with Windows XP on it using a backup copy that I had made earlier with Acronis True Image. (I keep my data, docs, videos, etc. on a separate partition...)

Not sure how you can repair your system, but in my case at least, I was at least able to make a copy of the crashed computer using an Acronis rescue disk (can be made post crash using another computer), and thereby save everything and explore the files in the backup copy to see what had been modified most recently, etc. + that way I could have saved my data had that been an issue.
