    Hi

Do you have the original retail Windows 7 DVD (not a recovery DVD from the likes of DELL, HP)?

If you do then you have two ways to do this and the first is using Diskpart to make the USB Drive bootable with good guide HERE (Diskpart is a powerful app so do take care is using as listing the wrong drive can have you ending up formatting your main HDD on the PC your creating this bootable usb pen on). Once made Bootable just copy the contents of the Windows 7 DVD to the USB Drive.

The other way is to copy the Windows 7 DVD to an ISO file format so the application able can read that file format, ImgBurn is good for making an ISO file and a Guide to creating this ISO HERE

Then when you have the ISO just use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool HERE and it will do all the converting to a bootable USB etc for you.

Then in your BIOS, make sure that USB is set to 1st Boot device > pop in the USB drive (not in a USB hub but directly into a motherboard USB port) and then Save and Exit the BIOS and you should be off and running.

Try using WinSetupfromUSB 1.0 beta 8 (yeah, I know it says Beta). I couldn't get the retail version I have of the WXP Pro installation CD to work as a bootable flash drive installation. I happened across this utility and it worked flawlessly.

The downloaded 7z file has both 32-bit AND 64-bit versions of the app. Unzip the archive and select the one appropriate for your system and launch it (it's a stand-alone app so, no installation is needed).

On the screen that comes up, select your destination USB drive, put a check mark in the box for Auto format it with FBinst, select the OS you want to use by placing a check mark in the box next to it and locating the drive with the installation CD/DVD and click GO.

It will take a while to copy all of the files from the installation CD/DVD so, be patient. Once the operation is completed, a message will notify you. Quit out of the app.

Restart your computer with the flash drive plugged in and your boot sequence set so the flash drive is AHEAD of the HDD. Hit enter on the first screen that comes up and select part one of the installation (WXP has a text setup portion and a graphical setup portion).

Do not remove the flash drive until you've logged into your desktop from the HDD. Then use Safely remove hardware to remove the flash drive. Simply pulling it may damage it.

OK, I tried installing the usb into the usb port, not hub. I can now get the bios to read the usb, I can also get it to read the usb with f8. I just still cannot get the computer to boot from usb just yet.

Did you change the boot sequence (order) to having USB as the first boot device like DavidGP said (I only said ahead of the HDD)?

right, Im still not getting an actual usb showing up in boot order. Im getting settings for usb storage device, which im unsure of. do i want it cdrom, floppy, or hdd or what? but i am getting it to read with f8, im getting it to read in the usb configuration, just not in boot order just yet

Correct. Set the USB storage device as first in the boot order. Save the settings and exit out of BIOS after plugging the USB storage device (the flash drive) directly into a USB port on the computer not into a hub. The computer should restart and should boot to the flash drive.

i have the usb now reading from boot up order. i have it first in the list to boot from. in that list of usb configuration, it also has auto and fdd. i have it set to auto right now, as i cannot get it to boot from usb still. it is still rolling over into OS load up.

ok, I got it working. I tested the boot up with windows 7 install disc from usb. the trick was the port not hub suggestion i think. i will test to see if it loads completely on a different computer. when i took the usb, it still doesnt show first boot in bios, yet it does show load priority with f8, that loaded it. thank you guys for the help, this was the second day on of me trying to get this to work. also, i ahd tried it in the back, but it was where my keyboard was plugged in, so it have conflicted somehow? anyways, thakns again you guys! this always turns out to be the best place for my questions regarding these matters.
