Hi I really need help here!

I have a really corrupted windows folder from a worm that started deleting everything. Luckily, I managed to back up all my docs, etc.

However when I restart, I get the message NTLDR is missing. Press ctrl + alt + delete to restart. This happens all the time so there is no way of getting in! I've tried changing the 1st Bootup option to CDROM in the Bios setup etc. I even tried copying the 2 files ntldr and ntdetect to a floppy but then I got a boot.ini failure and it will then try to boot from C:\Windows.

There seems to be no hope!!!!

    Someone please help!!!!

I'm a little confused. Are you trying to boot from the Windows XP CD so you can format and reinstall, or are you trying to recover the existing -- but damaged -- installation of Windows XP currently installed on the system?

Where did you get this CD from? Is it a retail XP CD? Is it a slipstreamed CD?

Only time I've seen this before was when I tried to make a slipstream install CD and the CD was toast after burning. Didnt realise until it tried to boot off it and gave me that error.

    Is it a legal CD?

Erm I downloaded it, but have a legal product key. I know this because I used to install xp onto another machine and then windows update worked properly.

    Why would that matter though?

XP anti piracy = one product key can only be loaded to one pc
If was loaded to a second pc service pack 1 would not be avaible, you would get anti-piracy message and or need to contact microsoft message or something like that.

But the same product key has been used before, anyway this isn't helping!!!!!:(

    Possible corrupt or dammage CD
CD rom? try different one, some burned or copied cd dont play well or play well in other cdroms, or dammage cdrom.

What kind of harddrive do ya have SATA or ATA, if try to load windows on SATA HDD and you dont have sata drivers on floppy, youll get NTLDR is missing message.

Helped a friend few weeks ago, he could not reload (xp restore disk) to his pc, after virus. I used Fdisk to whipe his HDD, then he was able to use his restore disk.

No the cdrom is brand new and worked fine before the virus got in. The disc is a rewritable disc, and I've just tried erasing it and then putting XP onto it again. I might just have to get someone to do it for me. Is there anything else you can think of, because I was told it would work if I changed how it booted up. Also, I have no idea what my harddrive is!

It's possible the copy of XP you downloaded isn't bootable. Try downloading the XP Setup floppies and using those.

However, the most well known pirated copy of WinXP -- Devil's Own -- is, IIRC, not a bootable version. The Devil's Own version is blacklisted by Windows Update.
