I have an insignia tablet and i wanted to run android in dual boot installed separately in another partition and also boot live usb operating systems ( linux).

However when i try to boot operating systems i cannot as it won't launch them even though i go to the uefi settings to boot from the usb stick it still launches straight to windows 8.1

Same thing for android it just won't boot any operating sytem from the usb.

ANyone succesfully install android in a seprate partition in a windows 8.1 tablet?

Android devices do not have a BIOS and there is no such thing as being able to boot from a USB device.

For anything to work, you'll have to root your device. (This is something I never consider doing).

Your most practical option is to keep android intact on the tablet and dual boot linux and Windows on the windows tablet.

My device is a windows tablet, i am trying to install android in a separate partition it came preinstalled with windows 8.1 already.

I cant' even boot a live linux cd, usb, sd card, or android live operating system even though i configure it in the bios to do so. Once again i am trying to install android not windows ( i already have windows in the tablet).

I actually see people online running both android and windows with tablets that came with windows so i was hoping i could do the same but my bios doesn't seem to want to boot from usb ( please note they booted their installation from usb)

I have followed steps i found online in guides and i cannot get anything to boot from usb.

Secureboot is disabled, boot from the usb i have android is enabled settings in bios are saved by all accounts i should be able to boot into a live operating system but it just won't.

The tablet just proceeds like always to boot straight into windows
I believe most people are installing android in a separate partition which is what i want as well because i don't want to mess with my windows files.

At this point i would just be happy to see if i can boot anything from a usb stick such as a live os if i can do that i can sure i can figure out the rest but i can't even get this first step to work

Is UEFI enabled in the BIOS? I don't own a windows tablet and do not run 8.1 so I have no way of checking any of this.
Things need to be disabled (secure boot) that might allow a device to boot from a USB device.

Someone on another forum can't get a Gateway netbook to boot from USB.

So does the insignia tablet have Windows 8.1 installed?

The way I read it, I thought you had two different tablets.

Greetings. I read through the post and thought that you need to get to the Bios to change Boot order.
Realising how different Win OS has become I wondered if you can get into the Bios from Win8.1?
    Yes You can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZcYbxOcPV0

    Good luck.

Sorry Stephen but the BIOS is not part of the operating system and cannot be accessed from it. It is usually accessed by tapping a function key immediately after power on. The method you have shown tweaks certain settings so that you will enter the UEFI BIOS rather than Windows on the next boot. When in BIOS you have no access at all to Windows.

How this might work on a Windows tablet, as opposed to a Windows desktop or laptop, I can't comment on, but on a Windows phone you can't play around with BIOS settings at all.

Actually from what i gather this is the ONLY way to actually get into the ''bios'' on a windows 8 tablet.

When my tablet boots i get no options to boot into a menu, from usb etc.. its not the same as the options a desktop would have.

Anyways i already followed steve's steps before making this topic my results were non existent tablet does not boot from usb or give me an option to even though i configured it through the bios. it proceeds to boot to windows

plodr--- The insignia tablet did indeed come with windows 8.1 , my purpose was also adding android alongside it ( in a different partition).

Well i managed to find the problem

I needed to use an efi .img file i was using an iso so it wasn't reading so i suppose this goes for ANY live os i would try.

I was able to boot live android but have yet to even tried installing it.

I think i got the wrong android version because the one i tried looks like for a smartphone as opposed to a pc or tablet. I gave 5.1 lollipop a try and that one was freezing and restarting too much. So i tried 4.4 and it worked pretty good but that too seemed like a smartphone version, there was also a couple of things not working like bluetooth, the gyro sensor the sliding etc..

I got the files from here:
    http://www.android-x86.org/download

I tried going to the main android website but i couldn't find any isos or images there.
