Booting Loop

Window XP Home edition, SP2

Computer keeps rebooting continuously. Error message says

stop C00001218 Registry file failure
The registry cannot load the hive (file)
\system root\system32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent or not writeable

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support
group for further assistance

This happened after defrag did not work for about 2 weeks and after I downloaded update to AVG virus protection.

Put in install disc and tried to repair, but all it says is windows setup is starting windows. It seems to load (according to the messages being displayed at the bottom of the screen); however, it gives just a blank blue screen. It will not let me reinstall or repair.

I've spoken to 2 different folks who seem to know about computers and both suggested I replace the CMOS battery. Is this a viable option and is it a difficult operation? Please help!!!

Thanks, Steve, for your response. However, I'm afraid it will not help me as it states "Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system". I do have an OEM-installed operating system. I will, however, search that site to see if I can find something else.

Appreciate your pointing me in the right direction, however.
