I am trying to boot an older Gateway celeron computer with no keyboard or mouse attached. It doesnt have a setting to change regarding stopping on errors, etc. Is there anyway to get this computer booted up?

Can't u just take the keyboard you have right now and use it on that computer for a little bit? That is what i do when i work on my older computers (e.g. Packerd 1987 lol).

You don't need a mouse to run computers though. And if hes trying to boot one than maybe it doesn't even have windows on it and then it doesn't even have mouse support. I would only buy a keyboard unless you are going to be using it frequently.

sadly you will need a keyboard..... otherwise how you going to get to the Bios and see if changing this setting Halt An All Errors to Halt On No Errors > exit & save

other than that you wil need a keyboard or one of those dummy keyboards a small circuit board device that plugs into the keyboard connector and hangs around the backof the case.

You can get a keyboard at a local geek store for 10 bucks or less. I don't mean CompUSA or Circuit City, I mean a local computer store.

I was going to use that computer on my network and I was going to control it using VNC. I didnt want to put another keyboard and mouse on it becasue I wouldnt even use them.

Halo, ther are no options in the bios to halt on no errors, etc. I have already looked.

Anyone know where I can get those jumper plug-ins for the keyboard and mouse ports?

    Hey Kman,
    What's UP!

Must be old Gateway, What model is it?
You could get a KVM Switch.
Wana trade something for Key board?

Just checked pricewatch.com keyboards $4.00 free shipping

KVM's will be more expensive than buying a separate keyboard and mouse.

Just use the one you have now, set it up, install VNC, then use your main computer to control it! :p

lol, you guys are funny. I dont want another keyboard and mouse sitting on the floor that I would never use. Basically, I am making it a stand alone server for my wife to use Peer-to-Peer software on and I dont want that on our good computers, ie mine or my wifes. Therefore, I dont have any room to attach another keyboard and mouse. If I had a picture of my work area you would all understand what I am talking about. :)

all we're saying is during the setup you must use a keyboard..when that pc is done and finished, remove the keyboard and put it back on the other machine. Then use VNC to control it. It's only for setting up the machine and that's it. ;)

Yep. Until you install the software that will let you remotely administer the thing, you're going to have to use a local keyboard. Once you get everything installed and configured you can remove it, but there's no way to take a bare PC with no OS and a default CMOS setup and install a remotely administered OS and keep it from halting the system for lack of a keyboard with no local input devices to configure it with.

It's like trying to call someone's house when you haven't got a phone installed there. You can call and call and call... still won't be a phone there until you install one.

da chicken is right. I've got a webserver in my house which used to be a Celeron 700, oddly enough, and you need to use a keyboard and mouse to set up windows, and I've set up Remote Desktop so I can RD in whenever I need to, and its also set up to do everything automatically (optimise the DB's, check the server emails, update the caches, check the DNS servers, check the net connection, defrag itself... etc.)

All I need to do to get it up and running is press the on button, and it boots up and all systems are go .... automatically. Its great :D

But anyway... if it wont boot without a keyboard then I'd suggest getting a dummy keyboard as Halo says, or making one (cant be that hard..).

Do what you must, but if you start to experience issues or need to access that computer for whatever reason, it's going to be a pain to have to keep switching keyboards....don't ya think? :p

Thanks for your help. I understand that I am going to have to set it up with a keyboard and mouse. I didnt think of putting USB kyboard and mouse in it, booting it and then removing the USB items. :)

Well, once you get Remote Desktop/VNC and the network installed and configured, and once you have the BIOS configurations changed to not stop on keyboard errors (or any errors if you can configure it so), you should be able to remove the keyboard on a permanent basis. It will then boot up and not complain about the lack of a keyboard, and the remote admin service means you don't need a keyboard, mouse, or monitor (just a network card).
