bootmgr is compressed in Vista

Hey guys I just installed Vista ultimate onto my desktop (dual booted with windows XP, vista installed second) and after installation I get this strange message that my "Bootmgr is compressed" and to "press ctrl-alt-del to restart" I've been looking all over for a solution and everywhere I look I see the same advice

expand bootmgr temp
attrib bootmgr -s -r -h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr -a +s +r +h

this would be great, except there is no way to do that from the main command prompt that the vista repair disc gives you. not only that but once I did locate the files (In some random PCAT folder) and did all of those steps, both from the cd drive and the drive in which vista is installed it has done absolutely nothing. Any help would be great appreciated as I am getting extremely frustrated

 

Not sure if you can still boot into Vista / XP or not?

From the Vista Recenv.exe (repair environment on Vista DVD)

The commands

bootrec /scanos will scan but not repair

bootrec /rebuildbcd will scan and repair

these replace the old bootcfg commands for use with boot .ini

 

While your post did help tremendously (and I thank you greatly for that) it turns out that using the first part of your command and then fixing the master boot record and then the boot itself fixed the problem perfectly. thank you for getting me this far!

Each incarnation of Windows has greater self repairing capability than the last. The various command line inputs for boot sector work have changed from XP to Vista.
