    Hello

    I am new to this forum, my name is clint.

    I have been having difficulty for months now with my LG laptop with the startup.

    Ever since i uninstalled and reloaded windows XP, now, when i start the computer, it beeps 2 times and gives the following messages:

    found new hardware

    "mass storage device"

    found new hardware

    "pci device"

    found new hardware

    "multimedia contoller"

    It then gives me the option: Press F1 to continue or F2 to go to setup

    If i press F1, it boots up, but most ( but not every time ) times it then says "new harware found" again in windows and lists the "mass storage device", "pci device" and "mass storage controller" again as new hardware that XP has found.

    Now, this is the strange part, when i select " allow windows to search online for the driver/software", in each case ( i.e. for all the 3 components, windows XP tries to find the drivers but cannot and tells me " windows cannot find the driver/software for your hardware"

    So, the result is that i have never been able to fix this problem. Strangely enough, the computer works fine when i just click cancel every time the machine boots up and tells me "found new hardware" - i just click cancel, cancel, cancel , 3 times and carry on working.

    So, it is not a case where the computer does not work, it is just that it takes ages for the computer to boot up and it is just annoying having to press F1 every time and then wait for the messages " new hardware found" and having to cancel 3 times.

    Does anyone maybe have an idea of what is happening here with this laptop of mine and if so then do you have a suggestion for how i can try to fix this problem. Your assistance / help is appreciated, thank you, Clint

    Greetings, Clint...

    Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, and see if there are any items listed there with a yellow exclamation point...

    This could very likely be USB related - are there any USB connectors on the machine that are not working?

    Thanks. There are no conflicts in device manager, everything there is fine, no yellow
    exclamation marks, nothing

    USB , no problems with USB

    Try F2, access your BIOS, see if anything jumps at you...maybe switching from 'autodetect' to 'manual' and back with your IDE and peripherals...the fact that it's 'finding new hardware' even before Windows attempts to load leads me to believe there may be a setup issue going on...

    And, if it's not a setup issue, and if you're comfortable with editing your registry, you might try this:

    Open your registry (Start, Run, type "regedit" (sans quotes), click OK)...

    Find the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]...

    Create a new DWORD value or modify the existing value called "NoPopUpsOnBoot" and set it to "1" to disable the popups...

    Create an additional DWORD value called "Error Mode" and set it according to the table below to control which messages are suppressed:

    0 = No Error Suppression
    1 = Suppress System Errors
    2 = Suppress All Errors

    Reboot for the change to take effect...

    Part of me is saying, "I wonder if it could be a bad CMOS battery?". Because it is happening before Windows starts. Some BIOS make 2 beeps on detecting a hardware change. If the battery was dead it would be losing information and have to refind it each time it starts.

    How that fits in with a reload of Windows XP, I do not know? Did it never happen before reloading Windows?

    Can you give the LG model? I'm curious how hard the battery would be to replace.
