I am using Cacheman to try to achieve some incremental performance advantage on my WinXP setup. I'm running XP Pro with two accounts, on a Cpq Evo system, 1.5GB memory, fast disk, etc.
Cacheman notes recommend to download from Majorgeeks the MS Bootvis tool, then do an initial trace of Boot + Dlls. I have tried that repeatedly and seem to get two errors, one on the exiting reboot saying transiently.. "Application Failed to Initialize because Window did not close" or some zany thing.... it only appears right at the reboot shutoff so I have to read quickly.

Secondly, when the system reboots, bootvis automatically runs to do its tracing. At what appears to be the end of that task, it hangs, then XP pulls up the obligatory "Application Failed" reporting box to report to MS the failure detail.

I note that when installing bootvis, it spotted a previous installation [i don't recall] and so I 'removed' bootvis first, then reinstalled it using the file fetched from here [MG].

    thx in advance

Any clues as to what is going on here?

Just a wild guess on my part. The BootVis tool is from 2003 and no longer offered by MS. With all the changes to XP (I don't remember when SP2 was released) maybe it doesn't work with XP.

SP2 was released in August 2004. But that is irrelevant. If the software was no longer compatible with XP then MajorGeeks.com would not be advertising it so. Let's leave the guess work out of the tech forums as it does not assist the OP.

    sure looks that way.
do you have any experience with cacheman on XP? I'm not sure its working well either. I think I'll just back all this stuff out...... was trying to speedup boot etc on one of my XP Pro machines that's really sluggish

Bootvis should work, however its not needed.

Everything Bootvis does to improve performance, XP does itself over time.

Of course, if you want to force it early, run this:

    Start, run

    rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Click ok. Takes a bit to run.
