Hey everybody. I've spent the last couple of hours searching around, trying to do my homework before posting, but I can't find the solution anywhere.

I have an old Dell Inspiron E1405 (OS XP) laptop and I've been having battery issues with it for a while. About a year ago the original battery died and I bought a brand new one. That one only lasted a few months before it would no longer charge. I ordered a second replacement battery that arrived yesterday. It was half charged when it came, but I let it run down before charging it. (I found out afterwards that doing so was unnecessary with lithium batteries.)

Well now the battery is completely dead and it will not charge. The laptop runs fine when the adapter is plugged in, but will shut off the moment I unplug it. (I have two adapters and they both seem to work fine)

When the adapter is plugged in the laptop reads "Charging, 0% at +0.0W" I've also noticed that the little charging light under the monitor is off. When I first plug in the adapter it will stay light for approximately 20-25 seconds and then shut off. I get the feeling it is not charging the battery at all despite what the computer says. (Both adapters do this) Discharge cycle progress stays at 0/30.

If there is any other relevant information you might need, I'd be happy to provide. Thanks so much for your time.

I had the same thing, turns out all the new batteries where probably fine and it is a problem with the power connector on the mother board. Not entirely sure what but there are specialist component level repair shops that should me able to sort it, not gonna be cheap though.

    Greetings, Medievalguy.

Agreed with the connector. This type of problem might show up in the Dell support forums - you could try browsing them for specifics.

I looked at a BIOS update for your machine, but it doesn't seem to pertain to your problem - if you wish to explore further, here's the link.
