Brand new computer

Hello, I am new to this site and computers. I have a desktop and just recently purchased a laptop. I have att as my dsl provider which comes with online protection. My laptop that I just bought came with a trial period of norton 360. I am not going to purchase this but do not know what i need in order to protect my laptop. does att have all the protection i need? i am considering putting AVG on my laptop but what else do i need? i am very unfamiliar with firewalls and spyware and virus's. just wanting to make sure i protect my laptop. I am using a belkin wireless n router also.
