I have a new laptop, it has windows vista. Windows update indicates 39 critical updates are needed to be downloaded. However, when I click on "update" it just hangs then gives me a "failed" message. Also, and this may be related, I cannot use Internet Explorer..I click on it and it hangs also. I'm using firefox at the moment.

I have disabled the firewall and it still hangs.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Connie

    Hi Connie

When it fails does it give you an error message code as well, if it does then please post the code as they link to the cause?

How do you connect to the internet, by phone, dialup BB modem, or 'always on' BB modem, and what does it say in Internet Options > Connections?

I was only able to get mozilla on there by copying it to a flash drive from my computer and copying it to my laptop.

Windows update gives an error code on failing. Just go to Start> Programs> Win Update. As you said it will show the updates available. Go ahead and D/load. If it fails you will see the error code. We need that error #

Can you try and connect the laptop wired to the cable modem directly and get updates?

Why I say this is, because I've got a DT and LT (both on XP home) and I have to by pass the Netgear router wired or wireless to update, connect to Windows Live Messenger and even Facebook!! Yes, it connects every where else!

A friend's XP Pro lappy updates without a problem on my network, wirelessly!!

Also what happens when you try to trouble shoot/diagnose IE?
    Cheers..

Could well be an mtu setting, both for the OP and for you Sikvik.

TCP Optimizer is a simple tool for fine tuning this setting.

Try this free app as it will take the hard work of re-registering many of the dlls and ocx files that WinUpdate uses http://majorgeeks.com/Fix_WU_d6278.html

Then an alternate way is this after following the link Sikvik posted is....

You need to do this from an elevated command prompt in Vista, so click Start > type CMD into the Start Search box and then when CMD shows in the list right click it and choose Run as Administrator, then type in the following commands but make sure you note the spaces, and hit enter after each one.

    proxycfg -d
    net stop wuauserv

leave the CMD window open, then using Windows Explorer or just by opening the folders, goto C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete all the contents.

Then back to the CMD windows and type and hit enter the below

    net start wuauserv

Then you can close the windows and reboot and try Windows Update again.

Thank you everyone for the responses. My son found a huge worm on the laptop that norton 360 missed. We took it back to where we purchased it, they apologized profusely and put Windows7 on it....so far so good...
