I recently ordered this processor. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=P43000E478-N&cat=CPU
It finally came in the mail today but when i installed it nothing happened. Power light just flashed for half a second and went back out. when i put my orginal processor back in it was fine.
the processor currently in my Asus M6V notebook is a socket 478 pentium m 740 1.73 ghz. is there something else i needed to do or is thenew processor just not compatible with my system???

the new processor is a Intel Pentium 4 3.0E GHz 800MHz 1MB Socket 478 CPU in case you don't feel like going to the link, hehe.

To be absolutely honest I didn't know you can upgrade notepads or laptops.
Did you install the new CPU's drivers?

lol, yes. it'sbeen that way for a few years. in fact a buddy of mine built his own laptop from scratch back in 04 from an asus notebook mobo.

Briefly looking at your laptop's specs on the Asus site, looks like the M6V runs with the M series cpu. You originally had the M740 and the max that your laptop appears to support is the M770 ie 2.13Ghz.

I think that you are trying to use a cpu that is not supported. I would drop Asus tech support a line to confirm this and ask for the cpu upgrade path for the M6V and supporting bioses.

I think that they will confirm my quick investigation

    Good Luck

P.S The boost you will get from the M740 ie 1.73Ghz to M770 ie 2.13Ghz will be small.

yea the moment i installed it my perfect 20/20 hindsite came into play, lol. i was thinking that as well. i tried gettin the specs from asus's site but their support site is so flaky sometimes and times out often. i mean they make great machines but they need to work on the site a lot more, hehe.

ur absolutely right. there isn't any point in me upgrading to that processor. the boost wont' be anything significant. so looks like i'll b buyin another laptop within a 6 mo to a year.....but this one has had a good run so it's not so bad.
    thanks for ur help man!

Yeah that's the best thing to do. Save your money, wait to see what changes the Vista OS will bring and then proceed to an upgrae or a new system.

lol okkkk sailor. i'm gonna leave u alone with that. the os has nothing to do with my problem at all. it won't get past STARTING UP let alone loading windows. it's purely a hardware issue man.

but neways i'm not a big fan of MS OSes and am already leaning towards alternatives.....if anything i'll just keep this one for another year before i go gettin anything let alone vista. i've been thinkin about partitioning my new laptop hdd (provided i get one) so that i can have something like kde on one and windows on the other...
i'm all about security but they just go to far for me, especially with 'registration". i mean what happens when u don't have internet (happened to me the last time i was in iraq). you would either have to wait until u get internet so u can even use ur freakin pc or go to somewhere were there was internet "register online".

No, you misunderstood me. I didn't say that your prob is software based. I said that when MS Vista are released there will probably be new abilities and many new hardware series.
I ain't MS fan either. I am thinking of having Linux on a second partition of my HD.
