Breaking XP

After awhile my XP installs all break the same way.
It quits remembering folder settings and favicons.
The recycle bin and control panel reset to default, List mode.
I set RB to display detail mode and control panel to display icons.
The RB resets all the time, like every time windows refreshes.
Favicons resets not quite as often, and the CP much less so.
But its annoying as hell, esp the favicons.
Have to re-visit every page, re-bookmark it, then repair icons with TweakUI.

Any idea how to fix this or where to ask?

    TIA

Sounds like your user profile is getting corrupted.

See here for how to create a new user profile and lose the damaged one:

But the question is WHY it keeps getting corrupted. Run a thorough memory tester to see if your ram is losing/corrupting data. Memtest86 is a good one.

    I don't think its a hardware problem.
I think it has to do with tweaking the system.

    Another symptom.
    I use ZoneAlarm
After awhile it won't remember settings between reboots if I change them.
    This only happens in XP.

I dual boot 98se and XP.

SE never has a problem remembering the settings.

I think a tweak, or tweaker is preventing new settings from being remembered.

It always takes a couple weeks or months for this to start happening.
Its never right after a reformat / reinstall.
And it never seems to coenside with installing software.
    It just starts happening.

    UPDATE:
The recycle bin and control panel are saving their settings, but I still lose my favicons in favorites.

Favicons have nothing to do with this bug. That will be something totally different.

Favicons are usually saved in the Temporary Internet Files(TIF)-Folder, so if wanting them to become permanent, then one have to find the favicons in the TIF-Folder and place them in a different folder and then change properties for the shortcuts so they use the icon in the new location.
