Brief crash/shutdown

Hello from a rather chilly South Africa...... (I HATE winter!!!)

Can someone please try and explain what could have caused a short crash in my system? I was reading mail and about to open a link my son sent me (no, he won't send me anything dicey, being in IT himself) when my screen just went black/blank for a few seconds, but I managed to restart without any problems and now it's all systems 'go' again. Nothing was lost; I don't think it was a power failure, as I have a UPS going all the time, no funny noises - just this very brief shutdown. I might add that in December last year I was notified that my HD was on the point of crashing, so had a new one installed, and fortunately I also have a full backup system - just in case.
Asked Mark (my son) for a possible reason for this brief shutdown/crash, but he hasn't a clue either, so perhaps someone here could possibly point a finger in the right direction? Would be grateful.
    Thanks!

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

If it crashed try this and look to see what errors are reading.

You might have some thing out of date like Video or some program.

bluescreenview is easy to use just open the folder and double click on bluescreenview no need for install.

    Hi Kim

I would agree with GSkulls post above in that a BSOD message if you gained one would be helpful to narrow down the issue, and reading your post it kind of reads as malware but as your son would not send malware, it then possibly leads to a media issue as we do not know the link he sent you, it could have been one that uses Adobe Flash etc.

If we know the link then its easier to diagnose the issue as I really think its a media one over your PC and Windows at fault.

Also what security software do you have installed as if the link was a media link blocked by a specific application it "could" crash a PC, it should not but never know.

If you click the link now, do you get the same crash? as this would link to a permanent issue over a random one that was just by chance.

Thanks a stack for your replies. I should have mentioned that it was a youtube video of male singers - barbershop, to be exact, and very beautiful! As I clicked on the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmDGntpZC3I - that was when it crashed/shut down for that very brief moment, but strangely enough, my antivirus (AVAST) did not show up anything untoward, and I find AVAST excellent - I've been using it for years and it has never let me down. Reopening that video, as well as opening others in the same category did not produce any glitches. Anyway, I'll check on your link, Goldenskull and if anything does show up in the process, I'll let you know.
    Once again, many thanks!

    Hi Kim

I would be tempted if you have not already to update your Adobe Flash as the YouTube vids use Flash to play the vids.

    laptop or desktop computer?
On my desktop, a 19" Samsung monitor started going black for brief instances which then became longer. The monitor is unusable until I can find someone willing to change a resistor on the thing.

Hello again! David, yes, my Adobe Flash is updated, and my son did a very thorough check on my machine, but everything is running smoothly now.

And plodr, I also have desktop (I'm afraid laptops and I don't really get on too well - guess I'm a little too old, maybe?) but coincidentally mine is also the Samsung 19" - so in other words, it COULD possibly be the monitor beginning to play up? Thanks for that tip and I'll keep my eye on it.

Once again, good people, many thanks for your advice - much appreciated! Until next time, keep up the good work!

Yup. I used the 19" briefly yesterday to test one computer. It was probably okay for 3 or 4 minutes then went black. I shut it off and turn it on. It shows the Windows desktop for a few seconds then goes black.

Read the ads for sales on monitors. :-D

It might not be cost effective to fix but I like Samsung monitors. My 17" which is way older is still going strong.
