Hi all, found this site when trying to fix this problem for my sister, so here goes :)

I recently installed Mcafee virus scan (the whole security centre thing) and it works fine, it is installed on both the laptop and the main computer.

However, it has been on the laptop over a year and was just put on the main computer last night, and we ran into problems today when we plugged in the network cable so that my sister could go on the internet from her laptop using the itnernet connection from the main computer. (The connection is wandaoo broadband)

She can still access all the files she used to be able to on this computer from the laptop but when she loads up internet explorer, nothing happens. When i disabled the firewall on this pc and she tried it worked, so I know the frrewall is causing the problem. I also watched the firewall logging information when she tried, and it is blocking an incoming TCP, although there are also some blocked incoming UDP's. I'd like to point out I have no idea what these mean, although there are certain ports mentioned.

    Here is the exact message:

McAfee Firewall blocked an incoming TCP packet. The remote address associated with the traffic was 192.168.0.174. The remote port was 1203 [ephemeral]. The local port on your PC was 80 [HTTP]. The network adapter for the traffic was "SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter".

    And

The remote port was 5113. The local port on your PC was 1026 [ephemeral]. The network adapter for the traffic was "WAN Miniport (IP)".

Needless to say, this is quite irritating and like everyone at this time of year she wants it sorting by Christmas. Any help would be most apprecated.

    CHeers everyone

I used to run McAfee, I remember having same problem, look at setup options.
If nothing else uninstall firewall and reinstall there are options for networking file & printsharing during install.

Hi McAfee is currently stopping me getting online as well.
Everything was fine, then I connected the laptop to the desktop two weeks ago (had to turn of the firewalls to get them talking) and now Mcafee firewall keeps telling that it's blocked a TCP packet from WAN Miniport! So I dial up and then all internet activity stops. I've tried switching off the firewall and then the whole security center but that didn't help. I suppose the next step is to uninstall McAfee completely but I'm not optimistic.
Ad-aware, spybot S&D and Mcafee virus scan have all come up blank.

I'm concerned because this happened last January (same Miniport message) and despite taking the laptop to the store and numerous emails to/from microsoft I ended up having to format the hard drive and reinstall XP!

Most likely the cause is that the firewall isn't allowing access for your sister's laptop, so you should open up its records and look for where it might say "computer name.mshome.net" and accept the intruder or whatever it is in mcafee. I use blackice and have to right click the name and select trust and accept and access is gained.

You need to open McAfee firewall: on left run the Configuration Assistant, allow Access to other shares & Access to my shares and finish.
then on the left again, click on Advanced Tasks, run set up home network, also run or Configure Network Adaptors= Allow ARP, Allow DHCP, and under NetBios over TCP, check box to: Allow me to reach other shares & check box: Allow others systems to reach my shares.

That should do it, you may have to restart PC's , do same on both PC's.
