Broadband Speed

Not sure if this is a hardware or software issue but I'll start here.

I recently upgraded my home broadband to full fibre. The set-up is that the fibre router is at one end of the room. A cable runs all around the room to a 4 port powered hub. My PC is connected directly to the hub. From the hub, another cable runs upstairs to my son's room.

My son is getting 145Mb/s download, my laptop in another upstairs room gets 130Mb/s on wifi, my PC downstairs only gets 65Mb/s. I've added a PCi Express network card instead of the original on-board network connection & changed the cable between the PC & hub but this has not helped. Can anyone suggest what is limiting the speed & how I can improve it?

    Belarc result is attached

Speeds are dependent on many factors - to include the cables and the network devices (routers, hubs, switches, interface cards).

Sadly, you told us nothing about these hubs. But to that, a switch is typically a better solution than a hub for several reasons. They tend to be faster since they are full-duplex devices and they are more secure, among other reasons.

    See network switch vs hub.

If you really are using hubs, I would swap them out with switches.

What speed is the fiber? What speed is the "hub" ? (is it really a hub?? 10/100?? that would be one issue, get a gig-switch!!) What version of WIFI? Reference

It doesn't really matter the speed of the fiber. The son is getting 145Mbps. The rest of the networked devices in the house should be getting something similar.

This was my thinking as well, if 145Mb/s is available elsewhere, the restriction must be in my PC.

Maybe but not necessarily. It could be a cable or a switch/hub port.

I've changed the cable & tried different ports in the hub.
Don't know why I haven't tried this before, I connected my PC directly to the router, 110Mb/s, plugged into the hub again, 87Mb/s/. It seems that my PC will connect at over 100Mb/s but still not near the 145Mb/s available.
