    Dear Major Geeks,

I have Dell Inspiron E1505 running on XP service pack3. I have cable internet I am not using a router and when I plugged my laptop directly to the modem I noticed that my Broadcom 440x 10/100 ethernet jack is not working. I tried to uninstall and install it, I updated the driver but no luck. Any suggestions, please?

    Thanks.

Did you have another computer connected to the cable modem before you connected the laptop? If so, you need to power down the modem (either remove the pin to the power connector or disconnect from the wall. Let the modem off for about a minute. Then plug it in and give the modem time for all the lights to come on, then plug in the laptop.

If the modem still doesn't see the laptop, check device manager to be sure there is no red x or yellow ! at the NIC.

You might want to try a USB to ethernet adapter, if you determine the NIC is dead.
