    Hey,

I have a broken laptop hard drive.
    It is a 500GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4 - ST9500420AS

I was just browsing on the laptop and suddenly the lappy froze, when I rebooted I got the message 'no hard drive found'.
After analyzing the problem I have found that the driver chip is broken. Its got some brown/rust marks on it so I guess that might be where the problem started.

I have swapped the chip from another 500GB seagate momentus onto this hd and the disk started spinning, however I was unable to retreive data from the disk.
it was the same model (ST9500420AS) but the serial number on the chip itself was slightly different.

    my question:
Do I need to find the exact same chip with exact same serial number?
or was the one i tried just bad luck nd maybe another one with a slight difference might work..

and how do i go about finding one? there's a few ppl on ebay selling these but whats the chance of someone having the same serial number as mine?

Thanks for any help everyone :)
