Hi, i have an asus G1 laptop and the screen recently broke. I am trying to use an external monitor, but am having some issues. So if I use the defualt video driver called Standard VGA graphics adapter I get the external monitor to show up in windows normal mode. However when I try to update the driver it asks me to restart and after my restart the external monitor no longer works it is just blank. I have looked in the bios and there is no setting for LCD or monitor. I wondering what I need to do in order to get this external monitor to work with the updated video driver.

    Thanks

does the laptop use a function key to change screens? for instance, on my lenovo, if i hit function along with another key (cant think of it atm) it will change outputs...

it has a function f7 key but i have tested it and Im positive its only function is to turn the laptop display on and off

I can't believe they would give you a vga output on a laptop with no way to access it.

Such laptops have an extra key with Fn on it, usually in blue or coloured.
If you look at the function keys there will be various pictograms on or above them.

Holding the Fn key down and hitting the function key give access to features such as volume, brightness and of course screen output.

Usually these keys cycle through available options by repeated tapping.

But you have to be a bit patient they are not instantaneous.

Im sure one will allow output to another monitor so long as the graphics card is intact.

    However there is another caveat.

With modern laptops the output is not strong enough to drive old CRT monitors, you need an LCD one.

Ok so I was wrong I actually did find the key to switch displays however when I try to install the new driver, this driver is from the manufactures website, it gives the blue screen of death when i boot up. Does this mean there is something wrong with the video card?

Can't see why you need a new driver, Windows should still work with basic VGA on any screen and you surely have bigger problems than a driver?

If you have swirched off the laptop without standard shutdown, because you can't see what you are doing without a screen, it is likely that the hard drive has become corrupt. That sometimes happens when I am fixing a broken screen.

You need to find a way to run Check Disk, perhaps from your windows disk or a bootable CD.

Can you get to safe mode (use the F8 key)?

yes i can get into safe mode.

    Then run check disk.

You don't need a driver for the monitor.

    What is your ultimate aim?

my ultimate aim is to play my computer games at this moment when I try to play it an error saying failed to find a suitable display device and Im not sure why exactly this is, but one fix i heard was to update your video drivers

Well now you can see output on your monitor perhaps we can help you progress.

Do you internd to repair the screen or just use the monitor?

As regards the monitor you need to get it to a display resolution that it can cope with. It probably does not have the same aspect ratio as the laptop screen so experiment in normal mode with resolutions and colours to get the highest you can that fits the monitor.
The graphics mode used in safe mode will not be adequate for games.

If you were to post some specifications you could get help as to what is needed for specific games. Leading edge games are often problematic even for the highest spec rigs.

The game is world of warcraft so nothing to high end and I have an Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 graphics card.

Ok so may have found an issue that might be causing the problem, my external monitor is not showing up in the device manager and my properties just read my monitor as default monitor. How do I change this?
