Broken PCB

    Hi all,

I've got a broken PCB and I've been looking to find a replacement chip for it but different websites tell me i have to look for different things, so what should I really look for. Basically what happened was, I was just surfing the net, and suddenly my laptop froze. When I rebooted the hard drive was not found, and when I tried the hdd in another laptop it wasn't recognised either. At a computer repair shop we tried a PCB swap and the disk started spinning but no data was able to be read (PCB wasn't an exact match).

I read somewhere that if the disk spins but data is not read I can swap the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip and that should work, is that correct?

I have attached a scanned image of the PCB and the drive itself. (Maybe someone can identify what's wrong with it?)

    Info from hdd:
    Momentus 7200.4
    ST9500420AS
    PN: 9HV144-022
    FW: 0006HPM1

    info from PCB:
    label reads: 100537087 K K0159CVF
    chip reads: 100565308 RevA

The data is pretty important as it has 2 years of uni work on it and an unfinished assignment. As well as the usual pictures etc.. :smileysad:

Any help appreciated :) thank you

    Cheers,
    Marco

    Hi,

I have no experience in replacing PCBs. I have just followed a few threads in the past and taken away that they pretty much have to be an exact match.

I have been unable to find an exact match for your board. I just thought I would drop a few links that I have found.

I noticed these two sites seem to be virtually identical and may be the same company but they do seem to provide a fairly comprehensive amount of information on the boards they have available. You can see that just about everything matches up with your board on a few of these except the model number/size of the drive and the letter after the PCB label number. Maybe an email or call would let you feel out how difficult finding a match might be?

This site, although it has been around for a while, gives much less information: http://www.hddzone.com/seagate-100565308-pcb-p-298.html which could lead to buying the wrong board.

This site might give some useful background information although it is fairly superficial as its goal is to get you to use their recovery services. But some of the examples are informative as a starting point.

I know there is one very good site for information on PCBs but I can't seem to find it. I'll keep looking.

It sounds like you have already determined that it is the PCB that is at fault. Just for my curiosity does the drive show up in BIOS of either of the two laptops or is it not seen at all?

Can you upload a pic of the other side of the PCB? I don't see anything wrong on the side you have shown. (Not that I could recognize anything less than corrosion or a burn mark. I'm just curious if anything would jump out as possible trouble.)

I've asked the same question as I did here at the forums on the Seagate website. I think I might have a shot by swapping the EEPROM chip from my old drive to the replacement one that did spin up when I tried it. (But was unable to read data)

I also send an email to the people over at hddzone to ask for more information, because the ic chip on theirs matches the one on mine too.

    thanks sach2 :)
