    Hey MGs!

Few days ago I started hearing an odd sound coming from the back of my computer, it was like a very very high-pitched, low volume, beep.
I didn't think it was anything and went ahead and used the computer anyways.
The next day I tried to figure out what it was so I turned off the power-supply to the computer and the sound stopped, when I turned the power back on the sound continued (even when the computer was not turned on).

I tried to boot my computer but when I did, it turned on for like 5 seconds and then it automatically shut down and it smelled a little of burned electricity. I am now unable to boot my computer.

Im guessing my power supply is broken and a new one is needed, but wanted to double-check with you guys.

If its the power supply, is it worth repairing or should I just buy a new one?

    Thanks!

    Edit: It's an Antec SP-500P

I hope you have not fried the PC because when a PSU goes it can give too much voltage to parts of the PC.
As for repair, it's not a good idea because they can repair the fault but the rest of the PSU can develop a problem when you come to use it again.

The best thing is try and borrow a PSU to test your PC or spend a few bucks to have it tested just to see if there is further damage.

    Good luck

my other suggestion was that a wire or something, was blocking a fan, but you say it happened right as you turned it on, so it's probably the power supply.

Before you go spending some money that may not be needed ....have you looked into the computer itself to see if you can see anything burned on the motherboard? If that mobo has a burned or flashed spot then it could be that some other part went bad first. Filters, resisters, diodes can all leave that burning smell when they go out. Filters can make that high pitched hum as well.

If you are still out to just replace the PS then you need to try to replace it with the same thing. If that is not possible then the power readings should match what your old one is. I believe that your old one has actually been discontinued. Here is a link to a replacement for the one that you have.

Have a look at the label on the side of the PSU. You should be able to find a wattage figure on there. Make sure you get an equal or higher figure.

Also, the PSU in your computer is one of the most important components. A good PSU will last you for years, whilst a cheap one may emit the magic smoke after three or four weeks. A good thing to look for in a PSU is weight. The heavier the PSU is, the better, as larger heatsinks and capacitors will have been used.

Have a look at this list for some good brands: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Even if you are not a big PC user, or a gamer, it is still worth getting a good PSU.
