I have a laptop with vista on it
something died on it now its a blank screen and then I restart it and it cycles the boot process right after the dell logo and restarts and does it again
    same result in safemode
Can I buy windows 7 and put the disk in and and let it install and not loose data?

if you have your vista disk, you can try to boot to it and repair the OS files. when you boot to the vista disk choose the repair option, then select 1. then at the prompt type: chkdisk c: /r
this should allow you to log in to windows

    no vista disk available
would a 7 installation replace the broken startup files?

    I have another question
I have xp64 on another system I am thinking of moving it 7 also
could I use a mountinr program to mount the image and install that way?

    Hi
No sadly Windows 7 is a different OS version so will not fix your Vista, plus I would not myself advise an upgrade install of Win7 over Vista until you fix Vista or maybe using a Linux live CD recover any important files you have and then clean install Win7, but this will mean you have to install your favoured apps again (so make sure yiu gave the media and any licence keys needed)

Also just as a point if vista is 32bit then you can only upgrade (to preserve your files and apps) with 32but Win7 you can only migrate to 64bit from a 64bit Vista or clean install.

can you not borrow a Vista dvd off a friend who may have it and try a repair.

the 64 bit system is a desktop
the broken vista system is a laptop

so yer saying i need to repair the vista installation on the laptop before I upgrade to 7? I can do that following the previous post's intructions

now i have a working xp 64 installation on my desktop I want to go to 7 64 bit if possible Can I upgrade to 7 if i meet the requirements?
