Brown Nosing

O.K., when it gets slow in here, I tend to pop open another window. I have been watching a thread that has peaked my interest.

We have all brown nosed, either in school or at our jobs. What have you done to make your boss/teacher notice your abilities in order to get an advancement.

I did it both in school and in my job. I showed up early, did extra work, made sure I was in the employers face and took them for drinks.

 

I never have and never will.
Um, can I get you something?

No one when they were in school, ever planned to skip a certain day, figured out what classes they were going to miss, handed in extra assignments, chatted it up with the teacher and showed the smile to avoid being marked absent?

How about vacation time? You want a certain time frame, so you work extra hard, smile and chat with the boss frequently to make sure you get the days off you book for?

What about raise time? Take the boss out for drinks and laughs.

Company parties and picnics. You don't make it a point to listen to the boss tell jokes and throw that extra laugh in?

Well, I admit.....if there is a need, I will do it.

 

wait a second.. you mean to tell me that I can slack and then only work hard when I need something? Damn, I had this all wrong..

 

Have you been working hard when you didn't need to? Your suppose to save that for when you want something.

 

Ever wonder how I can post here on MG during the day when I should be working? I busted my butt for many months to get this place to an operating capacity that was somewhat acceptable given my budget. I am now able to cruise on maintenance mode all the while reading up on how to make things better. So I can make money and relax during the day and help MG out. I spent 8 months building and tweaking an intranet system that essentially runs this places automated service request system. I spent 8 months on a database tracking system that ties into our time clock software so our personnel office can track hours. They can now tend to job applicants and keep a history of it all. I made everyones life around here easier so I don't have to go crazy

 

One time, I had this music appreciation class, to fulfill an elective. I had no interest in it, really. It was just to fulfill an elective, right?

So, the teacher says: We will compare and contrast the Italian opera with the German opera.

For the German example, she picks Wagner. Some real heady, intellectual type of opera (can't remember which one).. Anyway, you are supposed to have to research the thing before you go, otherwise you can't understand it, its too complicated. Very heady.

Then, we consider the Italian opera. It is very simple in design, she says, but it is so emotional. She says.... The Italian opera is typically so emotional, that it will reach down inside of your gut, then pull your guts out and hand them back to you.

What do I know about it. Okay. Whatever.

So, she starts playing audio clips from these operas. They are not in English. We are provided transcripts that translate....

So, the Italian opera is played... I THINK it is La Traviata, or some such thing...

Well,,, It comes to the part where the woman in the opera basically sings out something like.... (I will try to convey the general idea only...)


"You know and I know that I am nothing but a cheap whore and I have cheated on you my darling Boyfriend, but I love you so much anyway.... Please forgive my sorry ass for being such a miserable failure......[In Italian of course, which I DON'T understand a word of] "


All of a sudden, I kid you not....... (the truth SMT...)

I bust out in tears. Uncontrollable. I don't know why.
I'm thinking to myself. Great. Now everybody is going to think I'm mental.

I'm crying like a little schoolgirl.... I hide my face, but keep going....

Snot, tears, I'm a mess.



From then on, I could do no wrong in the Professor's eyes. She must have thought that I understood what was going on....

Funny now that I look back on it. It was not on purpose that I did this. It just happended, and for the life of me, I still don't know why I reacted so emotionally.

I do believe, though, that the Italian opera has the ability to resonate with people's emotional nature on an almost dangerous level.
But, what do I know? This is just judging from my own experience. To try to give it some cause-and-effect reason.

 

That's not brown nosing man, that's divine intervention! How else were going to pass the class and get credit

 

Call it what you want, but that would have been a great move if I had the opportunity to use it.

Well, I don't know if that was on of God's little gifts to me or not, but you are right....
There is a WHOLE lot more to some of these little "elective" classes than one would think. That is for sure...

 

If you want to succeed, take every opportunity. The competition is high, and you have to do something to make yourself stand out.
