Brownout Borked My Computer?

So a couple of weeks ago there was a brownout in my neighborhood. My computer was on, and connected to a power surge protector, and was subsequently turned off when the power went out.

When I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't. The CPU would try to start (the fan would start spinning for 2 seconds, stop, then repeat..), but that was it.

I suspect it's the power supply, but I'm not sure. Is it possible that any other parts were damaged too? I took the PSU out, and just today reconnected everything, but now the CPU won't even start. When I kill the power from the switch on the PSU, however, the CPU sounds like it's starting for a second (before turning off obviously due to having no power running through it).

    Thoughts?

that's a possiblility, but no other way to rule everything else out, unless you know 100% its not the psu. Do you have another you can try? also try disconnecting everything inside, drives, all memory, except 1 slot.

Yeah, I tried only leaving the CPU plugged in - still doesn't work. I don't have a spare PSU, and I didn't bother resetting the CMOS since I don't see the benefit (no changes from factory settings anyways in the BIOS).

    So definitely the PSU, right?

    Hi

Resetting the CMOS is still a good troubleshooting step, because a power variation could have corrupted the settings, preventing startup. If it doesn't work, you'll likely have to replace your PSU. If it does work, you just saved that money... can't hurt!
