We require the requested MGlogs.zip file from MGtools inorder to continue. See the Read and Run Me First instructions. Also which browser are you having problems with?

Your log from MGtools is extremely incomplete. Did you have a problem running it? Are you sure that you waited for it to tell you it was finished before attaching the log? Please run it again and attach the new MGlogs.zip file after it finishes.

Also since I'm not really seeing any issues in your logs thus far, let's run a couple more scans.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, Win7, 8 or 10, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Now please download the latest version of FRST the below link.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

    • See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your next reply.
    • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • the FRST.txt and Addition.txt log from FRST.

Did you see any issues that need attention? Anything else I should do aside from this?

No. As I said earlier, there are no malware issues showing.

Sorry, I thought when you said you didn't see any major issues, that there may be have been something else. I did the reset for the browser but still getting "not responding" that hangs for a good 3 minutes. Thanks again for your help. I can now turn on my UAS? Also I have some ghost like notepad icon with a gear and lock (desktop ini) on the corner and some on my desktop and some ghost like word documents ~S before the name of the doc.

    You're welcome.
If you don't use FireFox but use Internet Explorer instead ( do not have Firefox open when you test ), do you still have this problem?

Also try booting your PC in safe boot mode with networking and then run Firefox and see if there is a problem.

We will turn UAC back on when we get to final instructions. While it does not look like your issues are due to malware, I want to run a few more tests.

These are just due to having enable viewing of hidden system files. They were always there but you could not see them before because they were hidden. :) Final instruction should rehide these.

Okay, so any change in behavior in safe boot mode? Also does Internet Explorer work better, worse, or the same ? We will consider an install of Firefox 64 bit later. First I want to see what happens in safe mode and also with IE.

Problem is it sometimes takes awhile for it to happen. I haven't noticed anything with either.

Okay so keep trying for awhile. It is sounding less and less like a malware issue though especially since you say it is not always happening. Sounds more like something that is running on your PC may sometimes be impacting performance. For example, your Avira protection software could be cause issues during updating or during any background scanning.

It seemed to be a less since I did all the malware scans. Will keep surfing etc to see if it happens again

Nothing happened last night. Shortly after booting up this morn and using IE, it froze again. I minimized and was not able to open anything on my desktop as well i.e. word

Was this while in normal boot mode or were you in safe boot mode?

When this happens have you tried opening up Task Manager to check if any processes are eating up all of your CPU time?

  25. clixto

    clixto Specialist

I was in norm mode using IE. Next time I will check task manager.

Since you were in normal boot mode when this happened, there is a good chance that it could be due to a process that runs in normal mode but not in safe boot mode. A possible candidate may be Avira. I would try completely uninstalling Avira and then rebooting and running like this long enough to test the theory.

Another process that I have seen sometimes cause issues is Steam.

    Is this with Avira removed?

Haven't disabled avira yet. Wasn't sure if I should with ransomware being active

  30. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Avira wouldn't help you with the ransomware. You need to make sure that you have all of your Windows updates installed.

But anyway, is it still working okay?

  31. clixto

    clixto Specialist

lol ok...that's what I thought but wasn't sure. Yes seems to be running ok at that moment.

Okay then since this really did not seem to be a malware issue anyway, let's complete final instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    3. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    clixto Specialist

When I double clicked C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg seemed ok, but when I went into user accounts it was still off. After all this should I install firefox 64 bit?

  34. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes you can install Firefox x64

    For UAC:
    • Open Control Panel and select System and Security
    • On the next screen select Change User Account Control settings
    • On the User Account Control Settings form move the slide bar up to the 3rd - - bar from the bottom. This should tell you it is Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer
    • Then click OK
