This is getting ridiculous!! EVERY browser I have at some point ( a few hours or more of usage ) will either totally lock up my system ( Waterfox ) or "stop responding" to the point that I have to try to shut it down, often with Task Manager.

This has to be something in my system that is screwing them up!! Any suggestions people??

What are your system specs.Desktop or laptop. Are you using a SSD or regular hard drive.

I am not having any issues with waterfox or any other browser.Seems to me that this could be windows or some thing with hardware issues.

Mozilla-based browsers should have a Restart button (Help > Troubleshooting info or in the main File Menu) use it and then check about:memory and about:performance for clues - which sites are heaviest/take longest to reload/eat most CPU cycles, check carefully that they all unload after being closed) give them a few minutes and then refresh about:memory).

What is Hang may be useful, also check for remnants of uninstalled software clinging on with Autoruns and look at .dlls with Process Explorer, check DriverView for drivers you shouldn't have loading.

Ok let's run a few things.

In the search box on the taskbar, type Command Prompt, and right-click or press and hold Command Prompt (Desktop app) from the list of results. Select Run as administrator, and then select Yes..Then type chkdsk /f it will ask a question Press Y for yes. Then reboot system. It will run disk checks on drive or drives.

Then let's go back into command prompt (admin) then let's run sfc /scannow.Let us know if there are any errors.

This issue has happened in all browsers....Waterfox, Avant, Opera, the New Edge, and Google Chrome. Waterfox requires a hard restart when it locks me up. I went thru a bunch of diagnostics with Waterfox creator....no solution.
I have no other issues with my system.

It looks like the webpage at edge://memory/ might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

I agree with wile e and satrow both.. Give us specs, maybe run belarc and/or speccy and from satrow give up Autoruns and Process Explorer. We know your the only malware guru working and got to to keep you going. something has to show up....

Ok...got autoruns.....what info should I be looking for or attaching?

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

Just post the report and let us look thru it. And..... go thru it yourself to see if anything seems strange or definitely out of place. Like may if you have dropbox running all the time and some backup software also running all the time. Googleupdater I usaually delete if there. Adobe has a way of sneaking in. Tea-timer if it shows up. Hate to say it but full anti-virus always running can slow a pc down especially if other background task are set to run all the time also.

Autoruns > Options > Hide empty locations and Hide Windows entries. Save As > TimW.ARN and attach it:
    autoruns_settings.png

Process Explorer > View > Lower Pane and Lower pane view = .dlls. Work through Explorer and all browsers looking for anything that doesn't 'fit', sort by Company Name to make it easier:

I couldn't copy, share or otherwise move the '.arn' file? Needed admin privs maybe?

For recent problems, I see Internet Explorer started on 4/20/2020. I wouldn't have anything IE starting!
I see 4 things from Foxit with a recent date. I use foxit but have nothing in startup for it.

Try un-checking those things and do a clean boot . See how things run. You can always turn them back on again.

I don't leave Adobe running anything either.

**Note** You probably have to start in admin mode for setting to take affect. Just restart Autoruns with right-click if you need to.

I killed internet explorer, all foxit crap and opera and Chrome.....there was nothing enabled under startup in task manager as I had already gone into msconfig and edited some of those setting.....which didn't help.

What version of windows 10 are you currently running. 1908?

  19. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

So how many things still running that use the internet? Windows on auto-update. Any programs on auto-update.Any cloud backup?Anything that can already be using your net before you start to browse?

How much memory is installed? How much being used? What about resource monitor? It should show your cpu, memory, disk and network.

Are you currently getting any kinda errors when loading into windows. Will Microsoft Edge open at all.

In the 1903 update Some have stated that they can launch Microsoft Edge if they click on a link in a web page, but double-clicking on the icon does not do anything.release of KB4517389 bunch of errors are going to show.

Are you getting any type of issues with start menu.I know i was,Reason why i reinstalled windows 7.

When searching in the windows search bar is your CPU spiking at all.

    Try a zip upload.

Could it be a Fast Boot issue, a 'bad' System state keeps loading?

It's possible Admin perms are needed, I start it from WSCC with Admin, so those perms are likely to be inherited; also location has been a moving target with W10, try a Copy to the Desktop.

I've since found out my right button is giving me trouble. Just started doing it at just the right time to make it look like some sorta file protection.

  26. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

The resource monitor, pin it to the taskbar or have it close so you can start it when a browser starts acting up. Then compare to when things are normal.

  27. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

Still missing alot of info. CPU? Wired or wireless? If wireless is it shared with other devises? Have you ran ipconfig commands any to reset the connectivity? Ran Win 10's Network Troubleshooter when it's giving you problems?

  28. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Um...Intel,core i3?? Wireless..not shared. When it is problematic, I can only power down ( nothing responds ) or I have to keep trying to X out of the browser when it is "not responding" or go to task manager - which sometimes won't respond either> LOL Mem.png

  29. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

Using 73 % of memory there. I3 can probably handle that. But you're on wirelss, and there is a lot going on beside what's listed in your view posted. There's background processes and services, using memory but also some that can be connecting to to the web. Can you use the task manager with the full view like this:

Is your wireless internal or a dongle?

  31. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

Using KASPERKEY anti-virus? The full suite? It constantly checks for and installs updates. Is it running real-time checks for malware and viruses.

You don't have enough RAM for all the crap running.
    msedge - 1.4 GB. ???
    svchost - 570 MB. ???
    etc. etc...
Take another look at my screenshots and compare.

  34. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

And I see a scroll wheel to the side so we're not seeing all. Memory and how many things trying to use the wireless at one time. How many apps look for new versions and updates in the background and then how many try to install an update at the same time.

Edge is taking it all up!! I just started using edge....it hasn't stopped responding yet today...but it usually takes more than 4 hours of usage for any of them to freeze. Edge1.png

4gb of ram is not nearly enough ram for this OS.And it either sounds like edge is taking up most of the ram.Even on my system windows 7 takes at least 3.21GB's of ram.And that is light. And another problem i am seeing here is Edge is using the Multiple process function. This can be bad for ram.

OK.....I got the computer a long time ago....with Win8 on it. LOL...ram is not upgrade able.

I ran the two background files.....total usage is now 60% with Edge at 1.09 GB. (7 background processes. )

Maybe I should shut down edge and switch to say opera and see?

  39. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Switched to Opera....63% mem usage.......Opera - 1.45 gb. (17) but not listed as running in the background.

Try switching to Firefox to see if that lowers the System Resources even more as Opera is the same as Google Chrome multi processes and uses quite a bit or system resources.

Tell me this is not your main computer! I looked and you're the only malware tech since january last year. You need better. We should pass around a (virtual) plate to get you a pc. I'll pitch in!!!

I don't think ready boost will help.If the system is all ready having a hard time at 4 gigs of ram i don't think that disk caching is going to help much. You would probably need at least a 3.0 drive for that for any kinda benefit to happen. And at least a 8 gig or 16 gig ram stick.

The laptop is up-gradable to 8 GB. However, I would need to totally disassemble the unit as the RAM is on the back side of the motherboard and soldered on!! So...no.
    New one?
I have an out of pocket $2,500 bill for knee surgery in two weeks. Our truck was hit and damage of $1,000 which we are trying to get the other persons ins. to pay. Our water furnace developed a few leaks to the tune of $1,ooo. Diane just found out she has some serious scoliosis problems. And three weeks after surgery, I get to find out if another "specialist" can figure out why food gets stuck in my crawl!!
    Browsers:
Opera seems least problematic. Though it does occasionally suffer from Not Responding and FaceBook slows to a crawl after a short time being on.
New Edge is better with most sites, but suffers from the same above and has a shit load of background processes.
WaterFox was good..except it would freeze my entire system every day or two.
    Soooooo......
I sit on the couch, legs up, just being happy to be alive....:)

I don't understand why Firefox is using 3 times more memory in Win10 compared to Win7.
And the other browsers are also no better!

Did you upgrade Win8 to Win10 or is it a fresh install?
Facebook is a memory hog with all the crap going on in the background.
Have you tried using the mobile version?
    https://mobile.facebook.com/

  48. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Um...let me recall.....first it was a free upgrade. Then over a year or so ago, the entire system crashed...No way to recover, so I downloaded the ISO and used the USB to reinstall Win10. Recovered what I could but screwed up on some other things that I could have recovered by neglected to do so before the time was up on WinOld.

Not tried the mobile version. ....... egad!! That sucks!! I couldn't stand having to look at blurred pictures all day......

    Ok let's try some thing.

    Download these two items.

    Advance Systemcare. https://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/advanced_systemcare,1.html

    IObit Uninstaller https://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/iobit_uninstaller,1.html

Make sure you download this first. This seems to be Fast and light.Make sure you save any Book marks you use.
    https://www.comodo.com/home/browsers-toolbars/icedragon-browser.php?track=16207&af=16207

So what we are going to do is uninstall all the web browsers that you currently have installed.Keep edge installed since it is part of windows.
Next Step uninstall all current web browsers using the uninstaller i linked.

Make sure you have it setup this way.
    Capture.PNG

Then after that use advance system care and clean up system.
    Capture.PNG

This will help clean up a lot of stuff.Make sure you backup be for starting just in case.
