Browser Hijack...need help please

Well, I've been reading some of the other posts on here and I have a problem that sounds similar to others. When I start Internet Explorer, the "search for.." page comes up titled as about:blank. It will not let me access my yahoo email account or go to very many websites without kicking me back to the "search for.." page. I tried scanning with all sorts of free programs but nothing has worked. I know VERY little about computers and would appreciate any help. Thank you very much.

READ ME FIRST: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

 

Thank you for the welcome...so far I have tried going through the basic removal list and nothing has worked. I ran spybot, adaware, multiple virus scans, and still no progress. I tried getting a live windows update like it says on the first step, but when I try to access the windows page it boots me back to the "search for.." thing.

Any more suggestions, anyone?

 

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, there is NO SOUND on my computer whatsoever. I don't know if that is an unrelated problem or if it has to do with the hijacking but I had sound yesterday. :-(

 

Good news...I ran it a second time and the "search for.." page seems to have disappeared. Hopefully this is not just temporary. I went to Windows Update and downloaded a security update.
